I'd like to see Pierce and Green play together more on the wing. It can work because Pierce can guard most shooting guards who, contrary to perception, are not uniformly quicker and more elusive than small forwards.
Here are the 2-guards:
Knicks: either Kidd or Brewer with JR Smith playing as much
Nets: Joe Johnson, backed up by Bogans or Brooks
Magic: Afflalo and Redick
Raptors: Pietrus/Derozan, either one
Heat: Wade/Ray
Sixers: Richardson/Evans (Pierce guards either one anyway)
Bullets: Beal
Bulls: Bellinelli/Hamilton
Pistons: Singler/Stuckey
Thunder: Sefolosha/Martin
Hawks: Korver/Lou Williams/Devin Harris
Rockets: Harden
Bobcats: Gerald Henderson/Ben Gordon
Lakers: Kobe's going to be the bigger wing next to Meeks now
And so on. Pierce is not a defensive mismatch against any of those guys, even Wade whom he's guarded well in the past. Maybe you don't want him chasing after Redick too long but Redick having to guard Pierce is an even bigger mismtach. Pierce is still pretty quick laterally so I'm confident that he can stay with quick guards and use his length to really bother shots. He's always been good at blocking the jumpshots of smaller guards. More than anything, Pierce has a better chance of guarding 2 guards than they do of guarding him. If they don't guard him, then they're going to be giving up even more size against Green. The Celtics have never had another big small forward with offensive ability on the roster alongside Pierce. I like to see them take advantage of the mismatch potential. I don't get why Doc hasn't even tried to pair them on the wing more. The only extended stretch I can remember was against Utah and Pierce and Green took turns abusing Foye in the post.
