I, for myself, and a lot of people think that we are one defensive minded big away from having our top D back and being definite contenders.

So.. why not the 4-time Defensive Player of The Year, the 6 time All-NBA defender?

I know he is old and declined a lot, but that defensive tenacity doesn't go away.. He could help us a lot, more than Collins ever could. Plus, KG could switch back to the 4 sometimes and we would have a front court consisting of probably the two greatest defenders of the past decade.
When you lose, the easy part is to see who gives up. Giving up is very simple. You basically take your stuff and walk away. To continue to work and to continue to compete is one of the most difficult things, especially when you really don't have anything - KG

Ben Wallace is not as good defensively as Jason Collins.

Ben Wallace cannot matchup as effectively as Collins against centers with good size.

I'm curious with Ben as well but if I'm not mistaken he's 39 years old...just not sure what he has left in the tank

I dont think Ben would add much more than a locker room presence at this point in his career. If we think KG and Pierce are old. Imagine what a 39 year old Wallace would bring us.

Seriously? Does Collins have 4 DPOY awards?

We would have a better chance at playing good D if we planted a tree in the paint, rather than playing Collins.

Ben is 38 and he can't be worse than Collins.

no, we are one Elite Wing defender(in avery bradley) from returning to our defensive dominance..

we posted scary numbers last year with him in the lineup and basically no better a "big" rotation..

It's been about 7 years since Wallace was DPOY. The fact that he won those awards does little to bolster his play.

Ben Wallace no longer has the physical wherewithal to defend players legitimate center. Jason Collins does. Collins has the physical size/muscle to fight with players like Dwight Howard in the post and reasonable enough quickness as seen last year defending KG in the playoffs.

Without that elite athleticism that helped Ben Wallace be so special when he was younger, he is no longer a capable defender against centers. Ben Wallace is more of a slow-footed defensive power forward than an undersized center nowadays. Defending power based (PF) post players like Zach Randolph. That is where he can add value to a team defensively. He can still play some limited duty at center (as a third string) but he is not as useful a defender as Jason Collins is there.

Well if Collins is so athletic, why isn't he being used and when he is he's a major liability?

Collins is a specialist. A third string center. A situational sub who's specific strengths (post defense, interior defense) can be used in specific situations to the benefit of this team (matching up against bigger bodied centers where needed) but who's lack of all-round ability makes him too limited a player to be a regular rotation piece.

I think that's kind of the point. Wallace would also be seldom used and a major liability when he plays, likely more of one than Collins. I don't think that a player that nobody in the league has tried to sign by this point in the season is going to solve our size issues.

2004 Ben Wallace? Yes.

Right now Ben Wallace, nah. I'd rather have Fesenko. Slow, but nasty.

We are not even top 10 in defense as a team, and Collins has (BY FAR) the worse defensive rating of anybody on our team.  When I say BY FAR I mean it - his rating is about 10 points worset than anybody else on our roster.

Wallace is old and slow, but he is strong as an ox and he will play hard.  He is a capable shot blocker, an excellent interior defender and an exceptionally skilled rebounder.

Wallace is terrible offensive, but Collins is already utterly useless on that end of the floor - Wallace could not possible be any worse.

The only way this WOULDN'T be an uprade is if Wallace's season was ended due to an injury caused by wear and tear of all those years on his body.  Even then I'd argue it's still an upgrade - an empty roster spot is FAR more valuable than Collins is right now.
