It's nice, I guess, but a one year deal for a 37 year old reliever . . . I can't say anything bad about it, but it's just a little bit odd to make that signing right now because it seems pretty low priority.

Unless the Red Sox are planning something a lot bigger than they're letting on, this next season isn't going to mean much other than winning back some fans by putting a more likable team on the field.  So whether or not we have one of the better middle relievers in the league locked up on a one year deal doesn't seem like it will make a difference. 

It doesn't even fill a really pressing need, the way that signing an older yet solid starting pitcher to a one year deal would (e.g. signing a guy like Kuroda, Haren, or Dempster).

We needed reliever help, this is a good deal.  I don't think it makes us a contender though.
