As Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao continues to put up big numbers, his rise has left the organization in a difficult position. The Cavaliers are battling a question: Should we trade him or keep him?

“If he’s available, it goes without saying a lot of teams will want in,” one executive said. “He would be the top target.”

If the Cavaliers decide to trade Varejao, they want young, elite-level talent with high upside in return. Still, given the way the 30-year-old has blossomed over the past two seasons, Cleveland could very well be smart to keep him and his reasonable contract in the fold.

Across the NBA, players and coaches have had high praise for Varejao. Just last week, LeBron James said he’s been impressed with Varejao’s development.

“I think he’s probably more offensive-minded now,” Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. “They play through him a lot more, so he has a lot more opportunities.

Varejao is averaging 15.1 points, 15.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists and is considered an All-Star candidate this season.

I doubt the Cavs have much interest in Avery Bradley.

No but I bet they would like Sully, him being an OSU guy.

Not for Varejao.

They passed on Sully twice in the draft. Once in the high lottery and once at #17 where they took Tyler Zeller. They may like Sully but they clearly do not rate him highly enough to part with Varejao.

I agree.   But they would scarff Sullinger a heartbeat.

Wonder if Danny would trade RONDO for Varejao ,  then we could keep AB , Sully and FaB

As great as Varejao has been, they're not going to get an elite prospect with All-Star potential for him.  The kind of team that wants Varejao is a team on the verge of being a contender (e.g. the Celtics).

Teams like that don't tend to have elite prospects to give up.

One interesting possibility:

OKC trade Perkins + Jeremy Lamb + Toronto 1st Round Pick for Varejao.

The Thunder would be absurd with Varejao playing next to Serge in the frontcourt.

The best bait the Celtics have is still Green if he keeps playing the way he is.

The Cavs have young players at PG, SG, PF and C.  They need a SF.

Green, Bass and Melo for Sideshow, Walton and CJ Miles work numbers wise.

Really depends on how much they would value Green and Melo.  (Melo could easily be replaced by Sully)

How would KG, Paul and the rest of the guys react to that I wonder?

If you want to annihilate chemistry thatd be the quickest way to do it.

Thats an amazing trade for the Thunder, however the Cavs are pretty young at the guard spots already so Im not sure where Lamb would fit in.

I make that trade in a minute regardless of whether they want Sully or Melo. I would hate to have Walton as our backup three though. I am a big Green supporter so it would be tough to see him go especially for two players I hate (Walton and AV) but this would be a no brainer deal.

Rondo/Lee/Barbosa
Bradley/Terry/Miles
Pierce/Lee/Walton
KG/Sully or Wilcox (depending on trade)
AV/Wilcox

I am not sure if the Rondo for Varejao idea is a joke, but if Danny did that, I would have to take a long break from the Celtics. Just the other day, nbatv had a poll of who you would rather have - CP3 or Rondo. I didn't actually see the results of this poll, but the mere fact that it was even debatable shows that Rondo is quite valuable around the league. Rondo for Kyrie and Varejao - possibly, but no way in fh is Varejao even on Rondo's planet.

What is young elite talent with upside?

Does AB fit in that category (even if they don't want him)?

If it is AB level players that makes sense otherwise what type of player do they really think they can get?

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
His numbers are puffed up because he's a great rebounder without any help inside. They are puffing his numbers to increase his trade value- They're running plays for him repeatedly to get a lottery pick out of him.

He's a great rebounder.
On the subject of great rebounders, can anyone here imagine what Zac Randolphs rebounding numbers would be if Marc Gasol wasn't on his team?
Wow.

Sullinger is going to be a legendary rebounder in my opinion. He's much better than I thought he'd be and he's gonna keep losing weight and increasing his jump.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I doubt the Cavs have much interest in Avery Bradley.

Even if they didn't have those guys, I doubt they would consider Bradley elite level talent.

Varajao has been one of the best defensive big men in the game for a while now, and now the rest of his numbers are catching up.  He is Joakhim Noah with a smaller contract, and a less detestable hairdo.
