Definitely laugh at. This is just an overreaction due to bad sportsmanship like nick suggested. I think that if Obama granted them the permission to secede they would not follow through with it. I'm 95% confident about that statement and I think there's a 1% chance they really want to secede and a 4% chance they'd secede just to not look like bafoons even though they wouldn't really want to. I really hope to see Florida try. They can't even run an election. There is so much entertainment value there.
Haha, that would be great.

Would this secession have even occurred if Republicans had gained control of the government or if Obama was white?
Did his skin color suddenly change after the election? I don't recall his being white during his first term.
No but I am firmly convinced that most people that hold Obama's color against him, never thought in their wildest dreams he would win re-election.
The fact that you're firmly convinced that something's true doesn't mean that it is.

Tim, I know you love being the contrarion, but do you honestly think that none of the vitriol from the far right in the wake of this election is race related? I mean, That's just being willfully oblivious. There were over 200,000 Tweets that night that had "obama" along with a racial slur in them. The net has been rife with message boards declaring how a "slur" is president for a second time and how unbelievable that is, and how it represents the fall of our great nation. you think all those people are non-voters? you think all of them voted after carefully considering the issues and just happened to "hate n-words" along with liberal policy issues? If you want to make the point that the elected representatives and people in charge of the republican party don't have a racial issue with the president, fine, that is a sustainable argument even though I don't agree for a second that his race doesn't drive some southern far right wing representatives apepoop. But to act like Nick is all out in left field for saying that a significant part of the people who OBVIOUSLY held the president's race against him were republicans or voted republican is some fiction he made up in his own mind? come on man, your better than that.

There's some hilarious secession movements for some states in Australia. There is always talk of Western Australia seceding from Australia, and Northern Queensland seceding from Queensland as a state. Alot of the big mining magnates want the northern parts of Australia to be considered special economic zones (to bring in cheap foreign labour etc...)
My absolute favourite however was a group of North Queensland farmers formally writing to Reagan and asking him to seize control of North Queensland upon his visit to Australia and declaring it the 51st US state! True story.

There are many reasons to dislike Obama's presidency, but I would hope race doesn't enter the equation.
I'm sure that it does for some folks, however.
Back on topic, I'd be very interested to see the data on how much Federal Aid each of these states takes in, and how many signatories are on some kind of aid program.

To me, the whole thing is the logical extension of the tremendous divide in society. It's turrible. Democracy only works if people keep talking until some sort of agreement is reached and then the minority copes, and that just doesn't seem to be what people actually want. Your point is interesting, though. I remember when the Partie Quebecois was riding higher on a secessionist movement in Canada. Taking on their portion of the country's debt would have sunk them immediately. Ditto for any state here, were it possible to seceed.

I never said that none of the people who hate Obama were racist. Nick's claiming that the secession movement would never happen if Obama was white. Does he have any evidence to back that up? Do you?

The crazy part is that the predominantly southern states who want to seceded because of Obama's supposed "socialism" are the states that are actually benefiting from the tax redistribution.
Unfortunately, many people who use the word socialism have no idea what it means or its implications and many people who are get some sort of entitlement don't realize that when they complain about people who benefit from Obama's supposed socialism, they are complaining about themselves.

I'd simply settle for the Democratic Party (and their ideas) being outlawed.
Secession? No thanks.
