I saw, it was their traditional seasonal/annual  non-serial/non arch episode.

Fringe is the only show, that I can remember where it takes risks with different elements (technical/artistic) and try to shake things up for the audience.

This way you don't get repetitious/complacent episodes with regular serialized shows or formulaic episodes.
