The Nets are looking for expiring contracts and are willing to give up their first round pick acquired from Houston to do it.
http://www.hoopsworld.com/nets-willing-to-trade-1st-rounder-for-diaw

They want to trade Petro and Farmar for Diaw's expiring and willing to part with their Houston 1st to get the expirings.

Why can't we get in on this. JO, Dooling, MD for 1st rounder, Petro (better than any backup center we have)and Farmar (as backup pg)we could do a lot worse. Plus I think they expire in '13.

Why not?

I posited a similar trade in another thread, whereby the Celtics could take on Farmar and Petro in exchange for expirings, and get a pick from Jersey.

Would Ainge be willing to rent out cap space for a 1st rounder? Would he do so if it meant helping a division rival clear cap space for Dwight Howard?

If they really are willing to do it just for the expirings (I am not 100% convinced of this...Diaw could actually be of help to them down the stretch), then I would do this deal in a second.

Farmar has been good this year, and he would be a big upgrade over Dooling and can play next to Bradley (he also may opt out of his deal after this year, because he played so well this season), and Petro is a servicable big man, who would be fine to have on the roster next year at that price.

But again, I think these deals are not always as cut and dry as they are portrayed.  It looks like its just about the expiring contract...and yes, that is absolutely a key...but the Nets are still only 4.5 games out of 8th place, and could use a guy like Diaw the rest of the season.

I didn't realize the Nets were that close to the 8th seed.

So it may not be simply about the balance sheet, but also about bringing in a skilled player for a playoff push.

The Knicks going 2-8 (and a current 6 game losing streak) has put a lot of teams back into the hunt for the 8th spot.

Really hoping Milwaukee makes it. That would mean the Celtics get their 2nd rounder this year.

And don't get me wrong, the #1 reason is to open up more cap space for the summer, but not all expiring contracts are created equal.

TP for the foresight. Great minds think alike.

Answering your questions, I think Ainge would as both are players who can contribute and both expire next year, I think. Who else are we spending the money on?

Also, I think that he would look for a chance to make us better irrespective of a division rival having a chance at someone.

Interesting. This works as a three-team deal.

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7fyp5ef

Jersey gets Diaw, Boston gets Farmar, Petro, and the 1st, and Charlotte gets JO.

Jersey gets the guy they want, Charlotte trades an expiring for an expiring while reducing payroll, and Boston gets players and a draft pick.

[Boston would need to cut someone, or they could include Daniels in the deal.]

I'd do it. I like Farmer as a backup pg more than Dooling. We need a big and Petro is big + another pick.

It's a lottery protected pick that turns into a 2nd rounder. I'd pass on it for now. There will be  more opportunities to take in salaries to collect that type of assets.

Top-14 protected every year through 2016. If the pick is not paid by 2016, it turns into a 2017 second rounder, plus cash.
