Honestly I think offering them Pierce and a 1st rounder makes the most sense.
... Pausing for the temper tantrum fits of disgust from Celtic fans... "ARE YOU NUTS!? PIERCE? Pierce is a zillions tymes betterz!! OMG ... A 1st ALSO?... ARES YOU INSNAE?!"
Ok, moving on... Love Pierce. Second favorite player of all time. Unfortunately he's 34 years old and the perception (true or not) is that he's only got a couple years left of top play. But honestly I don't even see why Atlanta would do this. Pierce is under contract for another year so it's not an expiring contract that can alleviate their cap situation. We'd have to give up a 1st rounder (clippers pick?) for them to even think about it. Even then, they probably pass.
Why for Boston? PIerce is under contract for another year at 16 mil. He's actually hurting our cap flexibility as-is. Still, we have roughly 25 mil in cap space (if we let Ray, KG, Bass and Jeff Green walk) next season if we keep Pierce. So if the plan is to utilize that 25 mil for a couple impact young guys (saying goodbye to Ray, KG, Jeff Green and Bass), then it doesn't hurt our long-term vision to trade Pierce (16.5 mil next year) for a 26 year old Josh Smith (13 mil next year). It actually would leave us with 28 mil in cap space... So for you Dwight Howard dreamers (prepare to wake up in 7 days, btw), this fits right in line with your vision... Rondo, Josh Smith and the cap room to bring in Dwight Howard (rendered irrelevant by the fact Dwight will be traded to teh Lakers or Nets within a week).
Short term, you can throw another 1st rounder at Minny and pry away Beasley. Trot out PG - Rondo, SG - Ray, SF - Beasley, PF - Smith, C - KG for our playoff run. WHo cares, right?... we're out in the first round regardless.
Final call... nah. Makes little sense for Atlanta and the only Pierce trade that is really logical for the Celtics would be one that brings back expiring contracts + draft pick and/or young cheap talent.
If you want Smith you're probably gonna have to get rid of Rondo.
