Using the amnesty clause as an asset,

Im not 100% sure it works this way, but if ownership is willing to dump the $ why not do a trade for a terrible contracted.

then amnesty the bad contract before next season begins.

I dont think this will work if we are trying to sign FAs but if we have to just wait a year and resign our current team using bird rights to go over the cap then I think this works under the CBA

You can only amnesty players who were on your roster before the current CBA was signed.  You can't trade for a player, then amnesty him.

Yeah.  Doing otherwise would have only given large market teams even more of an advantage.
