Everyone is going crazy with how the Celtics can be a great team after this year. Well in my opinion there are 2 ways. One way is the long way, which is trading away our stars, getting draft picks, and taking years to develop and hope. OR, there is this crazy trade idea that I actually think COULD happen...

Hawks get: Pierce and Beasley
Celtics get: Josh Smith and Marvin Williams
Timberwolves get: Jermaine O'Neal and a first round pick

You then trade Rondo AND the Celtics other first round pick plus Chris Wilcox (money reasons) for Derron Williams. Guess who are Dwight Howards's best friends? Willaims and Smith. So, if Williams and Howard are willing to resign for $16 million (which is what Lebron/Wade/Bosh make), the Celitcs would have enough money to bring back bass and resign Ray Allen for a 2-3 million contract. That gives you a lineup of...

D. Williams
Allen
M. Williams
Smith
Howard

With Bass being your 6th man. CHAMPIONSHIP.

Of course there is always a question of why each team would do this?

Hawks: They get out of Smith's contract and, plus being able to still compete this year.

Timberwolves: Get a pick for Beasley, who they don't even play anymore, plus get JO's expiring contract.

Nets: Going into a new building and need a star. Willaims won't commit, so they get Rondo PLUS another first round pick.

New Jersey isn't going to trade Deron Williams.

New Jersey isn't going to trade Deron Williams.

Kind of dumb, if he isn't willing to sign an extenion, especially if a team if offering a top 5 PG sign for a couple more year at less than market value money, plus a pick

The problem is, they don't know if he will resign.  Because if Howard does hit the market this summer, they would have the inside track of signing both Williams and Howard.  And, unless that option is taken off the table (and the only scenario that I could see causing that would be Howard being traded to a team like the Lakers, with an agreement to resign), NJ will hold out hope that they can get Williams and Howard, and won't give that up for a downgrade to Rondo, and a future of mediocrity.

A number of flaws/assumptions here, beyond the feasibility of these trades:

1. That Deron Williams will sign with Boston, instead of going to Dallas or Jersey for same/more money.

2. That Dwight Howard will sign with Boston, instead of with another team for same/more money.

3. That Bass won't opt out, or will sign a new deal with Boston that is less than the $4.25 mil he'd make next year.

4. That Ray Allen will sign with Boston, instead of with another team for same/more money.

5. That the Celtics could fill out a roster with anything other than minimum level contracts.

That's a good point. Man what a risk for a team moving into a new stadium. If they are wrong they are in a lot of trouble, because who the hell is going to want to watch that team play. At least with Rondo, and some first round picks they would have some building blocks, but you do make a good point...

Yup, they went all in when they traded for Williams.  At this point, it makes no sense to fold, because if they lose, they are in trouble either way.

But, they also are still going to be playing in New York, and they will have a ton of cap space.  It might take a few years, but if they can exercise any amount of control, they should be at the front of the line when the next group of superstars hits the market.

This trade is almost certain not to happen, but I am going to play along. And address these one by one.

1. With Josh Smith on the roster, and him being good friends with Howard by hope is that Williams AND Howard would want to come here.

2. Same as 1

3. Could be tough, but I would hope after seeing Smith, Howard, Williams, he would want to stick around for a Championship, instead of an extra 3-4 million.

4. Ray Allen has said time and again he wants to stay here. His charity/family is here. I think even if this trade doesn't happen there is a good chance he resigns for a low deal.

5. Heats filled out a roster with min deals. Guys like Pietrus, JJ, Moore, ect would have to be the bench. The good news is all these starters (other than allen) are young, so they can log those big minutes that would be needed.

New Jersey isn't going to trade Deron Williams.

They will if DH12 doesn't get traded there and he doesn't sign an extension.  But I would say they wouldn't trade him for just Rondo and a late picck; they can get better package.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
New Jersey just lost Brook Lopez, at least until the end of the month.

I wonder what that does to their 'please take this somewhat promising big man for Dwight Howard' trade pitch.

You guys say New Jersey won't trade Deron Williams, but I think they'd trade a bird in hand for a bird that is pretty squarely in the bush.

If the C's are looking for a 'go big or go home' trade, Rondo, JO, and a 1st is a heck of a gamble.

Don't want D Will.  If Dwight wants to come and play on Rondo's team, then no objections.

Rondo and Howard would be a great combo, except for the end of games where you'd probably have to take both of them out, because they can't hit their free throws
