The Atlanta Hawks have started to gauge trade interest on forward Josh Smith, and Smith isn’t averse to ending his seven-year stay with his hometown team, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Monday.

Smith hasn’t requested a trade, but has privately told league friends that the Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic are his preferred destinations should the Hawks decide to move him.

“The relationship has run its course,” said a league source with knowledge of the dynamic.

There’s been growing acrimony between Smith and the organization, sources said, largely because of the feeling that Smith has been too convenient of a scapegoat. Smith had one of his most complete seasons for the Hawks, averaging 16.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

Payroll is an issue for the Hawks, too, and Smith’s contract – which has two years and $25.6 million remaining – is an attractive target for management to unload, if, for no other reason, than the five years, $110 million left on Joe Johnson’s deal is far more difficult to move.

The Hawks have looked to identify veteran players near the end of their contracts, sources said, but have had no serious discussions on trading Smith.

“They’re looking for a change,” one Eastern Conference executive said. “They would die to be rid of Joe Johnson’s contract or move Smith, but they won’t give away. They want something in return.”

Dwight Howard has been a proponent of the Magic trying to make a deal for Smith, a childhood friend, but general manager Otis Smith is low on assets. Houston has long been intrigued with Smith, but like Orlando and New Jersey, also probably doesn’t have the right pieces to make a trade. Hawks GM Rick Sund has long coveted Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen- two aging Celtics entering the final years of contracts – but Celtics GM Danny Ainge has yet to show an inclination to break up his core for next season.

Sorry I was being obnoxiously sarcastic. People seem to think Smith is a god or something. He has just as many faults as he does positives. I really don't think Atlanta or the rest of the league values him that high.

His value probably is at an  all time high though after three games, they should trade him now before he dips hard.

I think if Atlanta's title hopes wane over the next few months, this is totally plausible. Allen could even return next year to Boston, potentially. They don't need his Bird rights as he won't be getting a salary increase. Josh Smith is in a lot of ways what Boston hopes Jeff Green could become, for about the price he would cost if he got there.

For Atlanta, if they made this trade they would be under the cap next year with the option of using their amnesty on Joe Johnson and completely starting over with Horford & Marvin Williams (1 year left).

Not saying it will, or should happen, but I think it's a pretty fair scenario..

Not to mention, RR and Josh Smith are good buddies dating back to high school, so getting Smith would definitely make Rajon happy, which would be a good thing going forward in terms of post-Big 3 team chemistry.

Hm, that article is interesting, especially the bit about the Hawks GM coveting Ray / Garnett.

It would be interesting, if the team is struggling, to see if Danny would do something like trade Ray and Garnett plus picks / young guys for Joe Johnson and Josh Smith (or something like that).  That seems like something Danny could consider.

Perhaps something less drastic, like Ray + Bass + Bradley + 1st for Smith + Marvin Williams.

He may have covetted Garnett but does he now?  I doubt it.

"Zaza Pachulia"
Had a hard time focusing beyond this point. I would rather start Scalabrine if we had him.

Can't we just bring Gerald Green back?

Coveting Allen and KG doesn't mean he will trade Josh Smith for them.  Quite a few leaps of logic in that article.

Exactly. Smith is good, but he's definitely not great. If you're the 3rd best player on your team, and you're really as good as some posters here think you are, then your realistic team goals have to be higher than a second round exit and finishing 3rd in your division.
