I guess Danny Ainge doesn't want to commit to Delonte West longterm. Vet min ain't enough.

Au Revoir delonte. We'll miss you.

Actually he played 80 games last year.  Healthy, just not very good.
What exactly is expected from a bench player who sees ~20 minutes of action? 20 and 10?

Well Rondo had a bad year shooting the ball, and Dooling's TS% was pretty closely in line with Rondo's.  He's one of the worst rebounding guards in the league.  He's not a great passer.

Just because he's a bench player doesn't make him exempt from criticism for below-average production.
He wasn't signed to rebound. He can handle the ball and knock the three at a reasonable rate. So yeah, he's not Chris Paul, but as far as bench guards go, he's ok.

Rayray wouldn't like that too much. I'd prefer TJ Ford, who will be cheap. I understand his health issues, but to sign him as back-up means little minutes anyway, if and when Rondo is retained.

Fair enough, but how about this: the Bucks were +71 points with Dooling on the court, and -139 when he was off. Opposing SGs had a PER of 9.2.

I'm not saying All-Star or even starter, but I think he fits the bill as a role player on a veteran, defensive team, and could be very good for say 15 MPG on this team.

Alex Kennedy says that the Celtics will trade a 2nd rounder to MIL for Dooling tomorrow.

If it is for a second round pick I say Bravo.  We only have what 7 players right now?  He is a good versitle bench player.  Just what we need (one of our needs).

but they are paying him the 2.2 mill trade exception..wasted money...

so the bench now consists of:

PG Dooling
PG Bradley
PG Moore
PF Johnson
SF -Glass Daniels

they need to dump bradley for a bag of balls...he is not needed. looks like glen davis will get his deal tomorrow and Jeff Green will get some sort of qualifying offer...still have no size off the bench....

i would prefer s and trade with baby, sign gray as the back up center and get delonte...and one more wing might be good when daniels gets hurt again

Where's the incentive for the Celts?

If you can get him for a trade exception, it's a back up PG whose contract expires after this season.  Pretty much any other decent player at that spot will demand more than a one year deal and Ainge's gotta save that cap space for next year.

Mike

Agreed. I think it means no Delonte West (although he could be brought in as a SG), which is sad, but West will likely require a multiyear contract.  I think the Cs right now are all about single year deals. Acquiring Dooling gives them a decent (but overpaid) backup PG on a one year deal.
Celtics fan for life.

According to a Bucks forum in RealGM the Bucks are giving us a protected second round pick just to take Doolings 2.1 million off their books via Marquis Daniels Trade Esception.  Roy has mentioned that picks can't be combined with trade exceptions.  So this might be true.

Picks can be packaged with trade exceptions.

Trade exceptions can't be combined with other trade exceptions to make a larger exception.

I wonder if the protection on the pick is such that the Celtics never actually receive it, like the one received from Sacto in the Daniels' trade that generated the TE.
