Wow.  No way that contract is a good one in 5 years, let alone 10.

Makes more sense in the AL than the NL, but man that's a monster of a deal....

Basically, the Angels are massively overpaying on the back end to hopefully get 5 great years or so.  As much as $125 million in dead money near the end of the deal seems to be a heck of an overpay, though.

I can't blame Pujols for taking this, or the Cardinals / Marlins for passing on this.  It's a crazy deal for an aging player.

Holy Cow...

I can see the ARod deal for that money because he was younger at the time...

This is nuts.

Good for the Angels though....

They are always in on these big FA's and then the NYY or Sox swoop in at the last second.

They also signed CJ Wilson to a big deal...that one might not pay off.

Baseball, is the only sport where you get better with age.

You don't need much athleticism to have an extended career. Actually, in baseball, if you rely on athleticism a ton, your career may be the shortest of all type of players.

I wouldn't be surprised of Pujols was still hitting 25-30 HRs on the back half 5 years of that 10 year deal.

Look at how well Papi has bounced back. Pujols is way better than Papi.

Maybe but I think he is already showing signs that there could be some issues later.

His elbow seems to flare up every year.

I wouldnt be surprised to see him miss a whole year in 4 or 5 years then come back w/o as much power.

He's already 32 (or will be in January), and he's coming off his worst year.

What are the chances that his age 37 to age 42 years are above-average ones, let alone worth in the range of $25 million per season?

Keep in mind, David Ortiz was 35 last year.  Let's see where he is in 5 or 7 years.

LOL $38,402 per plate appearance (if he matches what he did last year)

At least 60% of those plate appearances, the Angels will be paying for an out.

How often do you see the franchise cornerstone leave right after winning the championship?

Like I can't picture Kobe Bryant leaving the Lakers after winning in 2009 or 2010 or Duncan leaving the Spurs after 2007 to sign somewhere else.  Or I can't see Derek Jeter leaving the Yankees after 2009.  Or like if the Patriots win it all this year, and Tom Brady signs somewhere else.

Just weird,  I'd probably take the money too though, but according to ESPN:

Quote
St. Louis' offer was for nine years and a little less than $200 million, according to a report by ESPN.com. Other reports said it was for 10 years and $220 million.

I couldn't see leaving the only team I've ever known and just won a championship with over 12% ($220/$250), or if other reports are true, maybe even 20% ($200/$250).  It's not that much off a difference, and St. Louis cost of living is probably much cheaper too, so might even be a wash in the end.  I would hope for some kind of home town, let's defend our championship discount.

Easy to say though when tens of millions aren't being offered to me  ;D

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class
