We lead the league in FG% and for most of the year it wasn't even close. We were over 50% until the last month or so. Just because our pace is slow doesn't mean we had poor offense. Our only problem was consistent scoring and defense from the bench. Our starting 5 were consistently the best 5 man unit in the league. Big 4 + Shaq, Baby, Green or JO
it's not the slow pace that makes our offense weak.
it's the inconsistency, the over-reliance on jumpshots, the long stretches without a point scored, the 4th quarter leads given up, the inability of any of our players to create their own shot in crunch time.
unless the jumpshots are falling, our team's normally efficient offense falls apart against good defensive teams.
Don't forget the lack of offensive rebounds...
yep, the lack of second chance opportunities (and giving them up to opponents) certainly hurts us, too.
the lack of offensive rebounds is tied directly to our over-reliance on jumpshots, too. nobody underneath the basket.
It's also one of the reasons a team as old and slow as the Celts are always near the top of the league in fewest fast break points allowed. They get back on D instead of hitting the glass.
yes, the celtics commit to getting back on defense instead of grabbing offensive rebounds.
but it's possible for a team to be very good at defense and get second chance opportunities, so i think that argument to some degree sets up a false dichotomy.
I might be mistaken but I remember reading somewhere that running back on defense instead of going for the o-rebound is proven to be more effective.
But our defensive rebounding, despite being 9th in the league or something, seemed lacking at times. Those second chance points swing the momentum and just hurts to watch. Our defensive rebounding stat probably comes from our great defense and we're probably not a good rebounding team tbh.
