Marc Stein is reporting that the Cavs are on the verge of acquiring Omni Casspi for JJ Hickson.

I'm curious if this makes Jason Thompson available.

Hate using Twitter but here's the link from Stein regarding the draft pick:

I knew they'd soured on Hickson, but I thought they still valued him more than Casspi.

I'm curious as to what either team is thinking. The Kings don't really need Hickson, and the Cavs don't really need Casspi (at least if it means giving up Hickson).

UPDATE: Sports Illustrated is reporting that Cleveland will also receive a conditional lottery protected first round pick in the deal.

Links?

If they can land a future first rounder that makes sense, especially if Scott doesn't like Hickson's progress/attitude.

Well, Casspi probably immediately becomes the Cavs starting SF, edging out Eyenga.

Antwan Jamison starts at PF.

I like it for the Cavs.

Wow, what a dumb trade.

I really don't think Omri Casspi is a very good player.  Poor defender, not even a great shooter.

Yeah, Casspi will start, but trading away Hickson so Jamison will start? They'll be a 12th pick in the draft, or the worst playoff team ever.

Maybe they plan to throw Tristan Thompson into the fire right away.

Thompson-Casspi-Irving is a nice core to build around. I think Hickson fell from grace pretty quickly last year; drafting Thompson, and now this trade, indicate how much.

Jamison expires this year, Baron Davis next year. Varejao still an effective player, and decent trade chip (as is Sessions). Still have the huge TE from the LeBron trade, and now a future first from Sacto.

Dan Gilbert is doing work.

Ehhhhh.  Only one of those is a likely All-Star.  Casspi is a career role player and Thompson is probably a solid starter.  That's not a core you build around.

Eh...I really think Thompson was a gross error in judgement.

Yeah I'm not sure I buy that either, but if they do get a first round pick from the Kings it makes some sense for them. They can play Tristan Thomas right away and add another piece in a future draft. Casspi helps their wing rotation out quite a bit.

Hickson is supposedly the player they wouldn't trade for Amare (although I always doubted that a bit).  That earns him a spot in the "we overvalue our prospects" Hall of Fame, right next to Nic Batum and Rodrigue Beausbois.  All have the potential to be good (or very good) players, but none has superstar talent, in my mind.

I'm pretty sour on both players, so Casspi + protected #1 for Hickson makes sense, just due to the premium put on size.
