LotR to me.

Never enjoyed The Godfather much.

Anyone seen the Cube trilogy? Pretty neat.

I had to make hard decisions here and tried not to count straight to video stuff and gaps of 20 years and totally new actors and directors.

I'm leaning towards Kevin Costner's baseball movies and I haven't even seen 2 of them.

I voted for Mad Max, but if I'd been more thorough than clicking on the first on that came to mind I'd go LOR.
Yup

I saw the first and really enjoyed it...it was a fresh idea.

Evil Dead series anyone?

For me no matter how you break it down Lord of the Rings!

best story, best books, best film making--war, world war II, community, loyalty, sacrifice  -- so many great analogies and lessons.
Days up and down they come, like rain on a conga drum, forget most, remember some, don't turn none away.   Townes Van Zandt

I agree with LOTR. I used to be a devout Star Wars guy, but as you get older and watch them, you realize how poorly written they were. But they did set the standard, along with another solid series of movies, The Planet of the Apes.

But overall, even though there were parts of the final movie that I thought were just toooo long, it's not a hard decision for me to say LOTR.

It's not even a fair competition.

Of all the options on this list, LOTR is the only one that was written as one story before being made into 3 movies.

With that sort of advantage nothing even comes close.

With all due respect to Star Wars and Raiders I have to go with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The great things about it was they were all three fantastic. So often maybe only one or if you are lucky two of them qualify as really good or better but all three of these films were excellent!

As with picking the best hoops player of all-time, there's no way I can limit it to just one ... at the times I saw them, each of these impacted me greatly, and I love just about all genres, (and some are multiples, so I'll say "franchises" ... I figure they include trilogies, so they qualify for me):

The Godfather

Alien

Indiana Jones

Star Trek

Star Wars

Lord of the Rings

Matrix

Dollars

Back to the Future

Jurassic Park

Toy Story

Mission Impossible

Harry Potter

I used to get very crebral about movies, (it was a family thing - ugh!), and analyze them to death, qualifying them on their direction and technical excellence, as well as writing, directing, cinematography, cultural significance, political impact, blah, blah, blah. But as I've grown older, I've come to appreciate movies more for the sheer "entertainment" value, so it matters not to me if they're just plain fun, (like "Back to the Future"), or "Masterpieces of Film Art", (like "The Godfather") ... I try to appreciate the enjoyment factor, and not get so caught up in critique.

PS - I can't wait for the "Avatar" sequels! ;)
