I have no problem with remakes in theory, I'm just not a fan of the practical application of the remake.  Remaking superhero movies (and the like) is fine.  Remaking bad movies is fine (like say remaking instead of doing a sequel of Tron would have been fine).  Remaking great movies, is just a bad idea, as the new one will never live up to the original, so why bother.

Sometimes, technology allows you to make the movie over that has a new look or angle.  (think King Kong)   Of course, it could still (and likely will) be awful (think Godzilla)

Karate Kid . . . refuse to see the new one.

the new one is not a complete remake, imo.  its basic story line is comparable, but it really is a different movie.  in all honesty, i think the new one is far superior to the original (and i loved the original).

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
No issue with Remakes as long as they're done well. Before movies, different casts with different directors would do the same plays in different parts of the country simultaneously. This is not a new, or even bad thing.

I guess that eja would make the 'plagiarism v remake' argument here, but I think that its all plagiarism. Every movie is plagiarized. There hasn't been an original idea in 1,000 years.

True Grit starring John Wayne: Awesome movie
True Grit starring Jeff Daniels: Awesome movie

Planet Of The Apes starring Charlton Heston: Awesome movie, but lets be fair..kind of a cult film too, and there is just no objectifying those. They're just priceless. Like Soylent Green.
Planet Of The Apes starring Mark Wahlberg: BAD MOVIE.

Miller's Crossing: Awesome movie
Brick, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Awesome movie
Yojimbo by Akira Kurosawa: Awesome movie
Last Man Standing starring Bruce Willis: Awful movie

All based on the same 2 stories from Dasheill Hammett (The Glass Key and The Red Harvest), and in some cases, each other, and all to varying degrees of success.

Originality is to movies as the Dodo is to birds.

EDIT: And also, SIMPSONS DID IT!

There are some movies I hope the remake.

Sahara.  I love those books "Dirk Pitt".

They ruined the chance to make more of them by doing a terrible movie.

I also know they are going to redo Daredevil.  Thank goodness.

I wouldn't mind a redone Flash Gordon.

Although, eja has a real point. Nobody...and I mean nobody..should ever re-do the Godfather, or Raging Bull. Never. Goodfellas, maybe. But never the Godfather. Never.

I'm waiting for some ambitious director (cough! Tarantinto, cough!) to start remaking Kurosawa films. It'll happen.

I hadn't heard that.  Kind of hard to do that movie without Bruce Lee.

Worst remake I ever saw was Miracle on 34th street. I thought it was bad enough when the colorized the real one.

I will pleage not to watch a remake of:

Wizard of Oz
Casablanca
My cousin Vinny

I bet they've been planning it for years, but just looking for the right guy to play the role. They know they gotta have a real superstar in the making.

SHould've gotten the guy from Ong bak.

I read an article in GQ that Hollywood is only trying to make remakes, adaptations, sequels, etc.
Why? Because it's cheap and the risk is low, meaning that because of the familiarity of the franchises, remakes and the like always stand to make money.

Even assuming that comic book movies are considered adaptations, this just isn't accurate.  I mean even the big budget summer action movies don't all fall into that category.  Cowboys v. Aliens, for example, is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer.

Without the remake we'd have been robbed of the following movies:

"True Grit"
"The Thing" ('82)
"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" ('78)
"Bram Stokers Dracula" ('92)
"The LIttle Shop of Horrors" ('86)
"The Man Who Knew Too Much" ('56)
"The Magnificent 7"....yes this is a REMAKE of "Seven Samurai" by Kurosawa

Just to name a few...

If the climate is right and the subject matter is relevant, remakes can be solid gold baby.

I'm sure it'll be remade and remade terribly, but I'll boycot the inevitable remake of "Jaws"

That one will be painful, and in 3D i'm sure.

I can't wait for the 3D imax remake of "The Shining" starring Shia Lebouef.
