Saw this little tidbit in Larry Coon's chat today:

Quote
Jamie in :
Regarding the Celtics 2012 1st rounder from the Clippers as part of the Perkins/Jeff Green trade. Can the C's get the pick from the T'wolves in 2012 even if the Clippers finish 11th-30th and say the T'wolves finish in the top 10 for the 2012 season?

Larry Coon:
This is one of the more complicated draft pick trades. The actual language reads like this:

2012 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers
The Los Angeles Clippers' own 2012 first round draft pick to Boston via Oklahoma City (top 10 protected in the 2012 draft, top 10 protected in 2013, top 10 protected in 2014, top 10 protected in 2015 and unprotected in the 2016 Draft). In addition, if the Los Angeles Clippers are required to send their 2012 first round pick pursuant to the above and are also entitled to receive Minnesota's own 2012 first round draft, then Boston via Oklahoma City shall receive the lesser of the Los Angeles Clippers' own 2012 first round pick and Minnesota's own 2012 first round pick. [L.A. Clippers -Oklahoma City, 6/24/2010 and then Boston - Oklahoma City, 2/24/2011]

So if the Clips' 2012 pick is not in the top-10, and they get Minny's next season (which is likely), then it's likely Minnesota's pick will be better than the Clippers' pick, and the Clippers' pick will go to Boston.

So, there you go.

I believe this was discussed in the aftermath of the trade. Still deserves reminding people, as I'm sure many will forget it by the time next season rolls around. Given Minnesota's current roster and the Clippers I can't see Minny being better than the clippers....

In case it's not clear from the above, if both the Clippers pick and the Twolves pick the Clippers own are in the top-10, then we get neither pick next year.

Instead of wrapping my small brain around this, I'm just gonna wait for the time in the future when I'm watching the draft and they say, "Boston will now be picking instead of LA".

Yup, and if both are outside the top-10, we get the worse of the two.

This is what I am reading from the explanation but I must say it is not what I remember after the trade.  At that time, many said that Minn's pick wasn't in the equation at all.

So it seems that it is likely that at least one of the two will not be in the top 10 next year, hence, we'll probably be getting one.

So if LA finishes 11th to last and Minnesota finishes 12th to last we would get Minnesota's pick? And vise versa if it was the other way around?

As long as it's not in the 10, it will be a good, decent pick (I hope).

This pick is looking like a great piece for the future. With so many guys pulling out of this draft because of the labor issues the 2012 draft should be a deep one. Looking at mock drafts for next year then adding the likes of Barnes, Sullinger, the morris brothers, and other guys who could potentially stay for next year makes 2012 look like a great draft to have 2 pics
