Mike Conley is no Rajon Rondo. Just ask one of his teammates.

That's precisely what I did on Saturday, sidling with Memphis' O.J. Mayo to talk about the game's best floor leaders. The Grizzlies shooting guard was waxing poetic on the topic, spinning off of a recent TNT segment in which Kenny Smith ranked the league's best point men. Sure enough, the name of the fourth-year player who recently signed a five-year, $40 million extension for the same team Mayo plays on never came up.

"If I had to choose one to play with, I think it would be (Boston's) Rajon Rondo, just because he gets guys the ball in the right spots," Mayo explained when asked to name the best in the league. "Any scorer or shooter or big man would love to play with a point guard like that."

  • Rondo = Good
Hopefully that means in a couple years we can lure free agents here to play with Rondo.

OJ Mayo would be a nice Ray Allen replacement....

Durant said something similar to this prior to the World Championship, if I recall correctly.

I don't think it's a big deal for Conley or any other point - saying you'd like to play with someone doesn't mean you don't like playing with the teammates you have now (although I have heard whispers from time to time that Mayo doesn't exactly get along with his team all the time).  On the court, Rondo is a great teammate, and he's probably one of the most unselfish players in the league.  I think almost anybody would love to play with him.

Mayo has a new contract coming up, though... if he wanted to take a discount - say, the MLE - to play here, I'm sure Rondo would love to play with him too...

[/I can dream, can't I?]

This is a good reason to be excited beyond the Big 3. Superstars want to play with a guy who is going to get them easy baskets, especially if he’s flashy, athletic, knows how to defend, and has a history of winning.

Ask Josh Smith, playing with Rondo is what got him such easy baskets. It’s also why he was able to go straight from High School to the NBA Draft Lottery.

Imagine how good guys like Rudy Gay, Carmelo, and Durant would be if they didn’t have to kill themselves to work for every basket?

Mayo was on the Team USA roster with Rondo for a quick minute, right?

See, Rondo never really wanted to play in the world championships, he just wanted to go on some Inception stuff and plant seeds in the other player's minds.

Now that's just one cool way to look at it!

It would be nice to get free agents to Boston, Im not so sure Mayo would be my first choice bu it certainly would be entertaining. I would love to see a Rondo/Durant pairing but after what James just went through leaving Cleveland, there is no way that I see Durant leaving OKcity. He has put his heart into that city and built something out of nothing. The fans adore him, he adores the team culture and chemistry. i just don't see it happening.

I hope he means it.

He's the perfect Ray replacement.

Not as good as Ray was in the past, but very similar talent and he could get there.

Let's see: Heisley traded Pau Gasol for Crittenden, a second-round pick (Marc), and two #1's at the very, very end of the draft.

For Mayo, therefore, we should be able to get him for Harangody, a #2, and the rights to Alberto Mirales. :D
