Hearing about Bobby Thompson passing away the other day got me thinking about how familiar I am with "The Shot Heard `Round the World" despite the fact that it happened long before I was born.  It's so iconic, that hearing the call, and seeing the video still manage to give me chills even though it was before my time (and they weren't my teams).

Other events that do the same for me at different levels...Ruth's called shot, Ted Williams homer in his last game, Havlicek stealing the ball, MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech for a non-sports event.

I find it fascinating that audio and video technology allows us to be intimately connected to past events to the extent that we feel like they're part of our lives, even if they occurred before we were born.

Do you think it was like that before events became recordable through sound and sight?  Did newspaper do the trick?  Folk tales or songs?
