The Celtics have hired ex-Nets coach Lawrence Frank as an assistant on Doc Rivers' staff, league sources say. He replaces Tom Thibodeau.

Had a feeling this was going to happen after I saw Lawrence talking to Danny and Doc at the summer league.

Glad that's settled.

Now just another 2-3 players (guard, wing, big) and we are good to go for training camp.

He was one of the my top picks to replace Doc, so I love this pickup.  Now, lets move on to finishing the roster!

  • Another undersized Celtic...
I'm cool with Frank coming on the staff, but what does he bring to the team? I always thought of him as an offense guy who got his Nets teams to run and play lots of fastbreak ball. Is he a defense guy too?

nets were solid defensively under his watch also ... additionally he was one of the better coaches in the league for a few years and handled rebuilding with some aplomb. (yes he got canned last year - but it's not like a 12 win team is ANY coach's fault)  If Doc wants to hand the job over after the lockout, Frank is not a bad choice at all.

What a great signing. I like Frank a lot.

He's straight up with everybody including the media, so I expect a lot of insight when Dickerson gets to talk with him.

He's a tough coach who preaches defense and he was simply a scape-goat for that awful product known as the New Jersey Nets.

Solid hire. I wonder if Frank may eventually become Doc's successor, but that's getting a bit ahead of ourselves.

Additionally, he ran the princeton with Kidd, then shifted to a dribble drive motion style when the talent changed.  The ability to change with talent - he is the sort of guy who succeeds coaching at the NBA level.  Basketball lifer, low ego - hard worker.

I think it is a great signing just because Frank is head coach material and will have the chance to get acquainted with the players and the system for at least 1 year under Doc -- that's assuming we'll need a replacement in the observable future.

He really was doomed in NJ once they decided to gut the team.

It is rare that management is loyal to a coach the way ours was with Doc during rebuilding. Coaches are the easiest scapegoats. I think Doc's advantage was that he was able to keep the players from accepting losing. Once players accept losing under a coach, even if it is the fault of the lack of talent, it often means a coach will be canned through no fault of his own.
