So let's start with the numbers:

Patterson - 6'9.25" in shoes, 240 lbs, 7'1.25" wingspan and 8'11" standing reach
Max vertical - 33.5
Bench - 17 times
Agility - 11.14 seconds
Sprint - 3.25 seconds

College stats (3 year career)
34 minutes, 16.1 PPG, 58.5% FG%, 8.2 Rebs, 1.6 blks

College stats (final year)
33 minutes, 14.3 PPG, 57.5% FG%, 7.4 Rebs, 1.3 blks

Boozer - 6'9.5" in shows, 258 lbs, 7'2.25" wingspan and 9'0.5" standing reach
Max vertical - 28.5
Bench - 13 times
Agility - 10.77 seconds
Sprint - 3.31 seconds

College stats (3 year career)
25.9 minutes, 14.9 PPG, 63% FG, 74.1% FT, 7.2 rbs, 0.7 blks

College stats (final year)
28.4 minutes, 18.2 PPG, 66.5% FG, 75.4% FT, 8.7 rbs, 0.6 blks

Pretty similar, huh?  And it goes beyond the stats.  I think these guys play a very similar style game.  They both are relatively high energy guys who attack the boards, and are very versatile offensively.  They both have also been overlooked a bit, because of the more intriguing prospects on their college teams, and because they are maybe a little bit undersized.

But can anyone explain to me why we should not expect Patterson to have a similar impact when he gets to the NBA?

So let's start with the numbers:

Boozer -
College stats (final year)
28.4 minutes, 18.2 PPG, 66.5% FG, 75.4% FT, 8.7 rbs, 0.6 blks

That is a huge difference in numbers.

In substantially less minutes, Boozer average a lot more points and rebounds while shooting a vastly superior percentage from the field.

Per 40 minutes -- Patterson averages 17.3ppg + 9rpg while Boozer averages 25.6ppg + 12.2rpg.

---------------------------------------------

I think Patterson is more comparable to a combo forward like Thaddeus Young than a brute force power forward like Carlos Boozer.

I expect Patterson to be a solid defender + poor rebounder + a third or fourth option style scorer as a face up power forward who scores a good number of hustle baskets.

  • Rondo = Good
Probably the main similarity between them is that it'll be hard for anybody to predict how they'll play in the pros.

Obviously Boozer wildly exceeded the expectations for him, since he was a 2nd round pick.  Hard to say how good Patterson will be, though I've seen him compared to a guy like Carl Landry (as a best case scenario).
