Good question.  If I knew the answer I think I wouldn't be here on this blog right now lol but with the team in Toronto.

That was an interesting way to score ... but we'll take it! I love Dustin Pedroia ... my favorite baseball player, without question. Third hit tonight. (I love athletes that beat the odds ... people told him his whole life he wasn't "built for baseball" ... u-huh!  ::))

For Beckett, I was about to use the excuse "It's April" but then I took a glance at his career monthly splits.  Historically, its not even his worst month (August is).

So, I don't know but I don't like it.

Pretty good piece in the Herald today.  I know many out there were bowing at the altar to UZR and defensive metrics this past offseason.

Quote
This slipped through the cracks, but the good folks at FanGraphs — who are constantly tweaking their formulas in an effort to make them as accurate as possible — recently tackled what many within the game considered one of the biggest flaws of UZR, or Ultimate Zone Rating, which was treated as Gospel this winter during all the discussions of defense around these parts.

That flaw was UZR’s inability to handle quirky parks like Fenway, where left field and center field are of such strange configurations, they cannot be judged with a cookie cutter model.

It turns out that Mitchel Lichtman, the creator of UZR, agreed, so he augmented his model to better gauge things like left field at Fenway, or right field in Minnesota, or the entire outfield at Coors, as the FanGraphs people explain.

The upshot of these changes is that most players were relatively unaffected. However — and this is a big however — one player had his UZR significantly altered by the fixes, which were retroactively applied to old data: Jason Bay.

The former Red Sox outfielder, who was killed all winter for his horrendous defense (which was part of the justification for letting him sign a free agent deal with the Mets) saw his UZR shift from minus-13.8 runs to plus-1.9. Bay’s play in 2009 obviously didn’t change. Only the numbers did. And the new numbers say Bay was not horribly below average last year, but in fact saved the Red Sox a couple of runs in left.

It wouldn’t have made a difference as far as the Red Sox re-signing Bay — we now know that was an impossibility once their deal collapsed at the All-Star break over his medicals — but it would have at least changed the narrative. Maybe fans and media members wouldn’t have been so quick to give up on the biggest bat in the lineup if they hadn’t been able to lean on the “he can’t play defense” crutch.

What is up with Beckett?!? He's playing with a major chip on his shoulder, and it's not helping him at all. I thought at first it was a temporary thing ... now I'm not so sure.  ???

Anyone else catch that Sox game today? Admittedly it wasn't a game they really deserved to win, but that had to be one of the worst umpiring jobs I've seen in a long time. I think they really could have tied it up in the 9th if Ortiz hadn't been called out on that ridiculous strike 3. The ump was all over the place with that outside strike zone all afternoon and that check swing strike on Beltre was a ridiculous call as welll.

The Sox need Cameron and Ellsbury back desperately though. That black hole at the bottom of the lineup is going to get exposed more and more the longer the regulars are out. For instance, even if Ortiz walks like he should have, the Sox still need either Darnell McDonald or Bill Hall to get on base to extend the 9th inning. Those aren't guys you want to be relying on in key situations when you're already engaged in an uphill battle to try and catch the Rays and Yanks.

They've been playing quite well as of late, after a very very very very very very very slow/bad/awful start.

Yeah, really ... he must've been listening to the chatter, cuz they were getting ready to bench him ... or worse. I knew he still had something left ... just caught some of that Celtic regular-season apathy ... C's wins finally woke him up. ;)

Man, I'm getting a bit weary of huge late-game comebacks by Boston opponents ... the Sox had this one wrapped up, and are just throwing it to Detroit. I hope Papelbon hangs on here. Jeez!  :P
