After re-evaluating I like the 20 team idea.  Play each team in your division 8 times (32 games), other teams in the conference 6 times (30 games), other conference teams 2 times (20 games) for a 82 game season.

Taking more of the financials into account this is what my divisions would look like.  The five new Canadien cities would be transfers of the 5 best existing U.S. franchise that won't make the cut.  The contraction draft would occur in a similar fashion to the regular draft, all existing remaining contracts would remain so it would be up to teams to determine if a player is worth it at their existing contract.

20 teams would work. More teams in Canada is good.
8 million for that game isn't impressive. More people likely watched in Canada and we have 1/10 the population.

The four major sports could all benefit from contraction. They have all become watered down.

Would love to see the NBA contract.  The way the league is now, one key injury and your team is done.  Plus if your team is say the Timberwolves - you have zero hope of contending this year, next year and probably beyond.

Fewer teams ups the level of play - as most teams could have 2 stars instead of one - and results in a much better product overall

I think the NFL is fine with 32, though they need to move the team from Jacksonville to L.A.

NBA could probably cut out 4 teams.

MLB should cut out 4 teams also.
