So having to start with the Knicks, my Pick 2 players were David Lee and Danilo Gallinari but I kept both with the intentions of trading both since neither are very good defensive players and I believe true good basketball teams must be able to play defense and rebound.
To start the draft I knew I needed to draft a go to player since the Knicks didn't have one and I never figured I would be able to trade for one given my assets, hence my pick of Zach Randolph. Now I know most here have very little respect for his game, his reputation or what he is currently doing in Memphis, but from all reports he has put effort into his defense since his time in LA and is passing out of double teams and doing very well in a winning atmosphere. His team mates like and respect him in Memphis and he has been their go to guy all year.
Trades allowed me to eventually surround the defensively deficient, Randolph, in the rotation with defensive big men Nene Hilario and Kenyon Martin. That they play together in Denver and are such an effective combo together was a factor in my pairing them together once again.
From there I chose Ray Allen, who I believed to be the best SG available at the time of his being picked and Ty Lawson. Some may question the Lawson pick as being too early but I wanted him desperately since I truly believe that he will be a great PG in the coming years. There is very little this kid doesn't do outstanding and he has that great leadership capability that I love in PGs.
Once I decided to go with a young PG, and followed that up with another young defensively oriented PG who could score in George Hill, the decision to stick with great ball handling, veteran wings in Grant Hill and Ray Allen was easy. They may have years on them but both are still top notch players at their positions that can score, handle the ball, create their own shot and create shots for others while giving a great effort on defense.
I rounded the rotational bench out with excellent role players in Matt Barnes, Quentin Richardson and Anthony Parker, all players that can play good defense, shoot the three and bring a veteran presence.
After that it was time to choose promising young talent to use as a core for bench players in the future and to possibly develop into mid level starters. I am really excited to have been able to draft Jon Brockman, a very promising, energy rebounding PF, Dante Cunningham, a small PF with the ability to pick and pop a very effective mid range jumper, Kyle Weaver, an impressive defensive SG that is out for the year but will return and has shown potential to be a great shooter and Nikola Pekovic, a huge center prospect from Serbia with a very good low post game and loads of potential.
These Pick 2 Knicks will be in a win now mode for a couple years at which point Lawson, Hill, Weaver, Pekovic, Brockman and Cunningham will be the core to which I can add a couple of max level free agents and first round draft picks.
Worst case scenario I think these Knicks are a bit below .500 on the end of the lottery because Randolph isn't the go to guy I think he is and because Allen and Hill are to old to guard their positions adequately and the young PGs aren't ready yet.
Best case scenario this team could blend very well with young PGs maturing into their roles, Ray and Grant proving to be great veteran leaders and efficient scorers on the court, Randolph excelling in his go to role and the rest coming together for a run deep into the playoffs.
