Have been hooked on a killer version of "Dreams" (Fleetwood Mac) by Whiskeytown (Ryan Adams band). Easily my favorite cover song right now.

I think this is a cover because Janis Joplin did it first, but I'm pretty sure he wrote it. Could be wrong about all of that.

EDIT: ok after some reseach I think Janis actually covered it from him.. so this is completely off topic enjoy the vid anyway I hate her version.

For me, playing a cover is about capturing a moment during a live performance, and giving everyone in the audience chicken skin when you break into that first riff.

That said, here's my two fav's:

Pearl Jam covering 'Keep on Rockin' in the Free World' (Neil Young) at the 93' MTV awards

&

Sublime doing the 'Guava Jelly/This Train Melody' (Bob Marley) from 98'

Alan Jackson- The Blues Man(Hank Williams Jr.)
Rare Earth- Get Ready(The Temptations)
Placebo- 20th Century Boy (T. Rex)
Scott Weiland- But Not Tonight (Depeche Mode)
Patsy Cline- Crazy (Willie Nelson)

I saw Mastodon this Fall and they did a great cover of The Melvins "The Bit."

TP for Alan Jackson's cover of The Blues Man. I absolutely loved Hank's version of it and thought it was one of his top songs ever. Then I heard Alan sing it. Unreal. It was even better.

Nothing Compares 2 U from Prince sung by Sinead O'Connor is pretty amazing. Prince has written so many songs done by other people you'd be amazed. Anyone know Manic Monday by the Bangles was written by him?! I'd have never thought that one was.

Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet. If our beloved Celtics don't play better in the playoffs we may all be "wastin away again in Margaritaville".

I had this cover earlier in the thread.  I like Kristoferson's better than Joplin's, but Joplin's version was grewat too - IMO.  She took a very country song and gave it more rhythm and more rock.
