Here's a NY Times list on Stereogum (I posted their link because there's some good suggestions in the comments section, spite some pg13 language)

http://stereogum.com/archives/Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.-list/ny-posts-100-greatest-cover-songs-of-all-time_005891.html

The list isn't as bad as people describe. I don't like it, but I think ranking the top covers of all time has to be the most impossible list to make.

Somewhere over the rainbow has been covered by nearly every artist, but Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, by far did it the best, IMO.
Such a great version of the song.

  • Be the posts you wish to see in the world.
Nthing Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower", Nirvana "The Man Who Sold the World", and Johnny Cash "Hurt".  Others I like:

Johnny Cash "Rusty Cage"
Nirvana "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"
Nine Inch Nails "Suck"
Diamanda Galas "I Put a Spell on You" (the mashup with Jane's Addiction on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack)
Eagles of Death Metal "Stuck in the Middle with You"
Pearl Jam "Last Exit"
Metallica "Whiskey in the Jar" (cover of a cover, technically)
Alanis Morrisette "My Humps" (for sheer comedy value)

Any Southern Rock fans here? How about "Gimme Three Steps" by Skynard? You know, 'I was a cuttin the rug down at place called the jug with a girl named Linda Lou". Or, how about "Country Boy can survive" by Hank Jr? Hey, I live 30 miles north of Branson so I have to get a litte country in there.

I love Gimme Three Steps by Lynyrd Skynyrd! That was a cover? Or that was covered?

Lake of Fire- Nirvana
Foo Fighters- Darling Nikki & Down In The Park
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
System of A Down - Metro
Ozzy & Motorhead - Hellraiser(not really a cover but they co-wrote and each performed on their 91 & 92 albums)

A couple of newer ones aren't too bad:

Five Finger Death Punch - Bad Company ( Bad Company)
Disturbed - Midlife Crisis (Faith No More)

I have not heard it yet but supposedly Nonpoint is covering Pantera's Five Minutes Alone... Can't wait to hear it.

By the way I grew up in the 80's and kinda stuck in the grunge days in the 90's music as Alice In Chains is my favorite band of all time, and I love the remade 80's & 90's songs.

That's right, I agree on Cake!
