Just watched "Sunshine" for the first time in a long while ... I'd forgotten what a great and under-appreciated sci-fi/suspense movie it was. I would say it's one of the best low-budget films I've ever seen, (made for only $40M), and it's a shame it didn't get more recognition, (I think it grossed only around $35M).
It was made in Great Britain and actual filming was only around 15 weeks, and done completely on set. It was directed by Danny Boyle, who said he would not do another sci-fi film, as it was too emotionally exhausting, (if you watch, you'll know why).
It was done with a group of superb "non-star" actors, and while the premise is not scientifically accurate, it still comes across very believable and very intense, via their extraordinary performances.
It was one of those I picked up from a pile in some bargain bin at Wal-Mart ... I had never heard of it or seen any advertising, but it was sci-fi and only five bucks, so I chanced it. I was not disappointed.
Excellent film.
