  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
In the last 3 days I've seen Invictus, Inglorious Basterds, Zombieland, Invention of Lying, and Law Abiding Citizen.

Loved Zombieland

Really liked Inglorious Basterds

I kinda liked Law Abiding Citizen and Invention

I didn't really like Invictus. I had no issue with the acting of either Matt Damon or Morgan Freeman. Great job by both. But I think the movie tried really hard to tell two stories and in the process, told neither.

i saw up in the air last night with my wife - she loved it and i thought it was really good - probably a good couples movie - not too chick flick and not too macho either.

Last movie i watched was Wayne's World. I love that movie. Just cracks me up and now I understand and get more jokes now that I'm older. I'm about to watch Kiss the Girls  right now. Don't really know what to expect..

Frog Princess

When I heard Disney was going to have its first black princess I kinda thought it might just be a token film to get critics off thier backs but it might be the best Disney animated film ever.

Disney is getting more global and they're doing an ok job

Lion King - Africa
Mulan - China
Emporer's Last Groove - Native American
Hercules - Greek
Tarzan - Africa
Pocahantas - Native American
Aladdin - Middle East Turk
Lilo and Stitch - Native Hawaiian
Frog Princess - New Orleans African American and Cajun

They could do better, but they could do way worse too

Technically speaking, the last movie I watched was "Doubt" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0918927/), and despite seeing it several days ago with others this is oddly the first I will have talked about it with anyone.

3 out of 5 Tommys

To sum it up: Despite brilliant performances and strong writing, a surprisingly average feeling movie....

I should mention that I'm a huge fan of Meryl Streep (like Denzel Washington, one of those few actors in history who's presence is compelling on screen in most of their roles), and am sold on Philip Seymour Hoffman as one of the emerging greats of our era.  So I expected (and got) incredible, thought provoking performances out of those two.  And that's pretty much the ballgame: excellent writing, thorough set design and two great actors given the stage in a movie that feels like Broadway.

However, to put it in basketball terms: this is the "Give it to Bird, everyone get the hell out of the way" approach to filmmaking.  The direction and camera work is intentionally average enough to scurry out of the way of the two stars, but it leaves you feeling like it could have been more than it was.  Still, credit where credit is due, the film did not feel long, it didn't often expound, and didn't feel overly pretentious (which is practically a miracle when doing a top heavy film adaptation of a period stageplay).

Sherlock Holmes.  I'm a big fan of the books / stories, so I had my doubts about the movie.  However, I thought it was really well-done.  It didn't stay strictly faithful to canon, but it also wasn't the action thriller the trailers made it out to be.

I'm sure a lot of people will think the movie was too long, but I thought it was great.

The Rock

Nicholas Cage & Sean Connery used to be my favorite actors.

Back then, I wasn't into films as much as I am now :p

Anyway, this used to be my favorite film for the above reason and erm... while I still think it's good in a lot of ways, I've regressed it to a 7 out of 10 Tommy Point movie. It's just not all that.

But you all probably knew that ;)

Really liked Holmes! Really well done and liked what Guy Ritchie did with it. Always loved the books and liked how they did this movie. Robert Downey has made a very good comeback.

"Up in the Air."  Very well done.  Sort of lighthearted black humor. Just when you think the movie is going to get sentimental, it kicks you in the ribs.

I am a hard-core, long-time movie buff. This is stuff of note that I've seen in the last few weeks.

Avatar - Needs to be seen in theatre with 3D. It's visually stunning and groundbreaking technically, but not a best picture movie by any means. It's definitely worth seeing.

Hurt Locker - Well deserved multi-award nominee. Taut, about bomb squad in Iraq. Believe it's available on DVD now.

An Education - Another well deserved multi-award nominee. Chick flick/period coming of age piece from 60's Britain. Maybe still on the art-house circuit. Lead actress was outstanding.

Carnival of Souls - An old B-movie psychological horror that gets referenced to by some major league horror directors. Pretty good for a real B-movie, but mostly of historical value.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - Like all the HP films, visually stunning and clever. Getting pretty dark in the soul. The better the definition, the better the experience.

Taking Chance - An HBO movie about the escort for the body of a slain marine. Highly recommended.

Cranford - A BBC period piece from England in the 1840's. Pretty funny if you have a penchant for Jane Austen-like dialog. Series has started on Masterpiece in the US just recently.

Pride and Prejudice (2005 version) - A Jane Austen/Kiera Knightley period piece romance that's visually stunning and has a great music score. Great date-night video.

Hangover - Preposterous and hilarious.
