I'm tired of hearing of the Lakers' 15 championships....IMO championships belong to the city and are not transferable.....the
Minneapolis Lakers won five....the LA Lakers ten not fifteen!!!!

They can keep those championships, it'd be no fun to be so far ahead of them that ownership didn't feel a bit of pressure!

I don't think anyone in LA disagrees.  However what is the consensus is that the Lakers as a franchise have fifteen.  It's the celtics fans that want to tack on "LA" so they can disregard the other championships.

It's always been about the franchise rivalry, not the city rivalry.  When LA thinks about their rival Celtics, it's not from their dislike of Boston, it's because the Celtics are the rival of their home team, the Lakers, not anything against Boston the city.

So in short:

Celtics: 17
Lakers: 15

ya. it's pretty stupid. but the national media loves the lakers and dislike the c's. even one more title and the lakers will be called the most storied franchise because of other finals APPEARANCES.it does'nt matter what the truth is. Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.s like mark jackson will make sure to repeat it over and over until it's just accepted.this coming year is SO HUGE.

While certainly finals appearances </> championships, I don't see how you can lament their media coverage while admitting their consistency in reaching the playoffs, and more importantly, the playoff finals.  The Lakers have had more successful and consistent in reaching the final stage over the past 2 decades, and thus obviously they will receive more media coverage than the celtics because 1) playoff coverage is huge and 2.) well, the celtics aren't there.  You can't expect equal media coverage when (barring banner 17) the Celtcs were pretty much a nonfactor for that many years.

Every time this comes up, my answer is the same and it's always right.....

Cities do not win championships, FRANCHISES do. No self-respecting Los Angeles Laker fan lays claim to those 5 Minn. championships. As a matter of fact, at Staples Center those 5 titles are consolidated on to one banner with Minn. prominently written on said banner alongside the 10 championships that were won here in Los Angeles.

Contrary to your thinking, the city of Boston has no claims to the 17 titles that have been won by the franchise known as the Boston Celtics. If Wyc decided tomorrow to move the team to Denton, Texas the titles go right along with him. You get the memories, the franchise gets the hardware. It doesn't matter how many generations of Celtic fanatics your family goes back to, you're just fans in a city that the franchise currently resides in. Facts aren't always warm and fuzzy, I know.

The only people who still subscribe to your theory are fans of a team who are desperate to keep a rapidly closing title count from getting any closer.

The Lakers were obviously named for Minnesota's 10,000 lakes. The name itself certainly does not fit the city.

It's like the Jazz. Utah is not known for its jazz, New Orleans was. The name itself is meaningless and has no connection to the city.

It's all a marketing ploy.  When they played in the Forum they only had the banners for the LA titles.  It wasn't until the three peat (which happened to coincide with their move to Staples) that they put up that one banner with the five Minneapolis titles.  Interest in the team waned during the 1990's when they went through there own little drought and I think the team marketed the chasing history angle when they started winning again.

Let them have it.  We went 22 years without a championship and they still haven't caught up.  It took them about 60 years to get 15.  Celtics had 15 in 27 years.
