new article on Boston.com, worth the read

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2009/05/31/changing_of_guard_a_sober_chris_herren_set_for_post_hoop_life?mode=PF

if you have kids who play sports, or want to - these types of stories are great for them to read to see the dangers of drugs/alcohol which abound star athletes (and kids in general)

I hope the best for Chris and hope he stays clean

Agreed.  The last Herren thread on Celticsblog occured when they found him unconscious at the Dunkin Donuts and you thought...wow...he's just about bottomed out.  Turned out that apparently was what made him get serious about getting help.

Interesting Tarkanian quote in there about the difference between him and Rafer Alston.

Lets sign him.

Let him sign someplace else first then we can do a sign and trade with Ray Allen for Herren.
Yup

Great article, and thanks for sharing the link. I remember when they traded for him and hope that he can wake up and face the day with as big a smile on his face as he had then.

The book that was written on him when he was at Durfee High was excellent. I highly recommend it.

Yeah, I read this article in yesterday's Globe.  Thought it was a great piece.  The way Mullin stuck by him is definitely a testament to the character of Chris Mullin and something that I wasn't aware of.

As a BC hoops fan as a kid, I remember being thrilled when I heard about Herren coming to BC and seeing him in SI.  Too bad things didn't work out there but I definitely continued to follow his travels over the years.

I know Herren's only been clean for about a year now but I'm hoping this time it sticks.

i played pickup one time with him when he was in his high school years. he was a colossal jerk. he yelled at some younger kid for taking two shots in a row missing both. it was'nt even a competitive game.there were out of shape people playing. an older guy(think he was related to the kid) told him to "shut his trap." i had no idea who he was until after when people were whispering what a jerk he was. played vs. him in a tournament too in which he staid out of the paint and casually drained threes on us.

I think I read this same story 8 years ago when he was with the Celtics. I hope for his kids sake he can stay sober. Papile and Tark talking about it like they really care about the kids, that's sweet - if unconvincing.
