Memphis and Francis are reportedly working on a buyout:

It's been a while since he's set foot on the court, hasn't it? I know he's been battling injuries these last few years. I wonder what he has left in the tank.

Still, for small money, wouldn't he figure into the mix as a late-season pickup? He's only 31, and, when he was in shape, could really fill a stat sheet.

I am totally a member of the "something is better than nothing" side of things.  I don't know if Francis is worth anything at this point, but I do think Ainge needs to do something to make this bench more dynamic.  Ideally it'd be with more length up front.  However, if that can't happen, he can at least make the bench more dangerous.  And a Steve Francis (if he can still play) would do that.

Only partially related. But I was watching an older game on NBA TV and I completely forgot how complete of a player Steve Francis was and how incredibly entertaining he was. It's a shame things didn't work out for him, because he was a true delight to watch.

I'm 99% sure he's finished and I'd rather take a chance on Speedy Claxton. In the department of veteran PGs, if you really want one, Cassell is much better than these guys.

Why would playoff-aspiring Atlanta buy out Claxton, who has two years left on his contract?

Unless he were medically unable to continue playing, perhaps--in which case, he'd be of no use to us.

Make it Eric Snow, then. It doesn't really matter.

When was the last time he was even a good bench player?

I agree that Cassell does have a chance to make a difference on this team.  He's not 7 feet tall, but he could make the bench more dangerous on the offensive end.

steve francis was nasty. wow. i totally forgot he existed. it reminds me of penny hardaway. there was  a year where shaq was injured in the first half of the year and penny was doing everything. he looked like THE next great skill player.

I wasn't aware Steve Francis is still in this leaague.

If it is a choice between Steve Francis and Stephon Marbury, I take Marbury everytime.
