The fact that I tuned in and found that the Celtics weren't still at the top of the news on NBA.com didn't completely surprise me because the Lakers win came after and they were of course promoting tonight's games as well, but it did bother me to call the Celtics' rings "gawdy".

First off I think they meant "gaudy". Second, here is dictionary.com's definition of gaudy:

Quote
gaud⋅y1   /ˈgɔdi/ Show Spelled Pronunciation  [gaw-dee] Show IPA Pronunciation

–adjective, gaud⋅i⋅er, gaud⋅i⋅est. 1. brilliantly or excessively showy: gaudy plumage.
2. cheaply showy in a tasteless way; flashy.
3. ostentatiously ornamented; garish.

Why would the NBA basically insult the jewelry their champions decided to design to commemorate their championship season?

I mean gaudy = cheaply showy which to me = insulting.

these rings were nice. they weren't any more gaudy than the miami or san antonio rings for the past years so i see no problem with them. just a anti-celtics writer i suppose- we see lots of those these days.

I agree, totally ridiculous comment.  Have they ever SEEN the rings these teams get?

Or have always gotten?  Bill Russell's rings look very similar...

At least the misspelling prevents it from being taken seriously by just about anyone!

  • TRANSFORMATION INTO CHAMPION COMPLETE!!!
It's all NBA propaganda, if you watch the replay Stern tried to trick the 12 C's active players into wearing these.

HMMMMM.

I just don't see Stern giving the Celtics the ability to play with invisible players.

i agree with this.

even if nba.com calls it guady, who cares?!  its not about the ring, its about what the ring represents

Nothing new here, they've said the same thing several times in the last few years. The Miami rings stands out most of all, exact same language and description.

i think the celts ring is pretty--i got to slip one on after the game.

i have seen several other nba champ rings and several of them just seemed like they were either trying too hard or phoning it in (a la lakers rings).

the celts ring looks like a real championship ring--as well as a nicely designed piece of jewelry. it's also timeless.....teams change logos over time so having the actual "CELTICS" script would have dated it a bit....the clover is forever. having an all-out logo on a ring (a la san antonio) kinda cheapens it.

it's simple, and to the point. it's not a school ring, it's not a wedding ring, and it's not a ring that anyone (with any amount of common sense) would wear on a daily basis.

i have small-ish hands, so the ring takes up a decent amt of space on my finger lengthwise, but it's not even as heavy as it looks.

as for the nba's constant fence riding ....ugh. they milked that celts rags-to-riches story for all it was worth, milked the celts-lakers series for all it could....but still seems to have a chip on its shoulder about the celts and the players. it's like they married a rich guy they hate just for the money.

these guys worked their asses off and had a priceless journey last year....if they wanted diamond towels and toilet paper, they've earned the right to do it.

That's the point. The OP provided 3 definitions of gaudy, but focused on the second. Clearly the article is using the first definition.

The rings are always gaudy. But for that kind of occasion, over the top is good.
