One of the problems with today's 24-hour-coverage-media-marketing-age is that some players are annointed based on looks, potential, a smooth jump-shot, or a large fanbase, while others fail to receive recognition year after year with results such as playoff wins and championship rings.

Lebron James has unique abilities I won't argue that, but he also has huge holes in his game.  He's got a streaky jump shot, he's a below average free throw shooter (career %72 ) , he doesn't fight for offensive rebounds and for a guy who's supposedly got the passing game of Magic Johnson his assist to turnover rating is similar to Delonte West's at about 2 to 1.  By the way, have I mentioned he's 6'8 and has one season (out of 5) where he's averaged more than one blocked shot per game?

These things go unnoticed year after year because he makes enough "Wow" plays and scores enough points that he's more marketable than say a James Posey - who changes his game on a nightly basis for his team.  One night Posey is a defensive stopper, the next night he's a three point specialist, sometimes he's guarding a shooting guard, sometimes he's playing at power forward, the ONLY thing that really wow's you about the guy is how gosh darn good he is at whatever he's focusing on that specific night.

So here's my point: If you watched nothing but ESPN or read nothing but the major sports writers you'd be absolutely shocked to learn that Posey has won championships on three diferent teams (being absolutely integral) while Lebron has never won an NBA championship.  The supposition I guess is "It's just a matter of time for Lebron"  while the same supposition was made for Allen Iverson and Charles Barkley.  I think it's crucial to remember why they play this 82 game season with endless playoffs... For championships.  That's the ultimate goal in a game that is all about goals.

So while Lebron get's all the publicity to say whatever he wants, he really hasn't earned the right to say it.  The difference with a guy like James Posey is that he HAS earned the right to talk, but he won't.  He doesn't have time because right now he's too focused on winning another championship.

There are no shortage of folks here who will vouch for the fact that I'm in the running for world's largest James Posey booster - perhaps to the point of nausea for some of our readers (what can I say, I love the guy and wanted him back badly).  That said...

To compare Posey and LeBron James with the "Posey changes his game on a nightly basis for his team" - with the "for his team" addendum certainly appearing as though it's implied as a knock on LeBron in comparison - is patently absurd.  LeBron is one of the three or four basketball players on the planet.  A big part of that is his diverse skill set - the scoring, the rebounding, the beautiful passing vision, the fact that he's gotten progressively better defensively - and his size and on-floor leadership.  Like every other player in the league, he hasn't perfect and he has some room for improvement.

So he's human.  And he occasionally rubs some folks the wrong way.  Neither of those two qualifications make the Posey 'comparison' (as it were) anywhere in the vicinity of "called for."

Count me on the wagon for believing that if our beloved boys in green had featured LBJ as sixth man instead of Pose last year, I'm thinking LBJ might have been the one with the ring this past June.

Garnett is different, he trash talks no doubt, but he's a team player. He does what makes the team better and gets them pumped up. Bird was the same way, and if I could choose either one over Lebron I would.

LeBron isn't a team player?  Everyone gets on him because he defers at the end of game, that he gives up the ball too much.  His defense has improved every year, he was the unquestioned leader of the Team USA team, and he has never moped about having a terrible team.  He's asked for their to be action but hes enough dragged his feet and not given a 100%.  Ive never heard any complaints of Lebron being a bad teammate going back to his days at Saint Vincent.  But back to the fundemental issue, we have no idea what Gabe Pruitt might of done to LeBron before hand, what their history is, I mean really, its a basketball game a million things could of lead to Lebron making fun of Gabe.

TP, stuntin.  Couldn't agree more.

Lebron is an evil bully, out to besmirch the reputation and crush the confidence of a young guy trying to win a job.  Shame on you Lebron.  The poor kid is probably still curled up in a ball in the corner of the locker room, whimpering like a puppy.

Let's get a grip here.

Why is this a big deal?
Yup

That really bothers me that LeBron would say something like that, he has been mouthy lately, looks like LeBron is getting that "Im the king and everyone else is dirt" type of ego now huh?...  ::)

"Now", you say?  I was saying this back in May, when everyone on this blog was saying how "classy" LeBron is.  Glad people are finally seeing LeBrick's true colors.

Like you were saying Tony Allen wouldn't make an NBA roster?  ;)

Just teasing, Brick.

Yeah yeah find every opportunity to remind me... as Tommy would say, I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong.
God bless and good night!

ok, i guess i will be the thread jerk....

i dont disagree with what lbj said.  although it was a corny analogy, i agree with his message. i havent seen anything with pruit to make me think he will be in the nba in a few years.  im rooting for him, but he hasnt shown me anything that he will contribute to this years team (god, i hope im wrong).

personally, if i were lbj, i would have gone with one of sidney dean's (wesley snipes in white men cant jump) lines....

When other teams are Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ing about you that's a good thing. ask James Posey. Pruitt is going to be around fore a while. He's athletic, can defend. he's long and tall. He'll play for a while.

Let LeBron talk all he wants.  In the end Pruitt has a ring, and LeBron will be watching him get one in a few weeks.

very disappointing remarks from one of my favorite non-Celtics.

No excuse for that attack. LeBron plays the game the right way, but he should show some support for up and comers making the most of limited opportunities (especially when it's in preseason). Not everybody is blessed enough to be drafted into a starting job.

Look guys, cut the guy some slack ok?  Even a clam get's barbeque sauce in it's ear sometimes.

Why? Lebron does not cut anyone else slack.

I'm sorry what part of the phrase "even a clam get's barbeque sauce in it's ear sometimes" made you think my post was serious? :P

I was trying to avoid commenting on this, but LeBron has really gotten on my nerves lately. Ever since his interview at the Rookie-Sophomore game in New Orleans where he pushed Jamario Moon out of the way (http://youtube.com/watch?v= NUjc2fIxL0Y). He's becoming a bit of an idiot and little comments like this (and several others) are dragging him down. If only his personality matched his basketball skills.

TP, Schupac.  That clam quote is deep (ha)

Glad to see so many people share my feelings about king james.  He is just a spoiled kid who has never not been the center of his universe
He should have gone to college for a year.  If he isn't already, he will be the best in the NBA very soon.  That spot is held up to pretty lofty expectations.

Which shows you why sometimes rings are overrated. To those who have said Lebron has done nothing, must have ignored the Olympics. He can say he is a World Champion, because he is. As far as what he does in the league, I think leading a team to a Finals at his age was quite an accomplishment. Even if they did get swept.

Hey Lebron.......
Paul Pierce schooled your butt in the playoffs last year, I just did not want you to forget that!!!!!!

I'm not a Lebron James fan but that didn't happen. If your talkin bout Kobe than thats another story.

let me know when someone else in this league holds Lebron to less than 40% shooting in 5 of the 7 games in a playoff series.

to play devils advocate though, paul didn't exactly go around tourching the stat sheet before game 7.

i think his point was that "schooled" implies paul played good D and tourched him on offense at the same time, which didn't in fact happen. the one game they both went off, thier defense on each other suffered.

that said, to get back in line with my love of paul, let me know when another 3 netrualizes lebron as effectivly as paul :D

El BJ's first few years in the league, he was overrated and overhyped, and a creation of referees and star calls.  And his personality is lacking, and I do believe he has a painfully swollen head.

That said, this season and in the Olympics, he looked like the best player in the world.  I can admit that.

Doesn't mean anyone has to like him.  "Global Icon" though he may want to be, part of that is being likeable.
