  • I left Indiana. Because it was horrible.
After seeing the "surprisingly good movies you've never seen thread," I started to think about the movies that I had seen that I had the lowest expectations for that turned out to be pretty memorable, or at the very least a good way to spend 2 hours.  The ones that immediately came to mind were:

Hellboy (on HBO about 6 times a day after my senior year in college, caught it while drinking one night and was surprised at just how competently made it was)

Down Periscope (Kelsey Grammer as a Navy captain?  Somehow was still funny)

From Dusk Till Dawn (I don't have words for how much I love this movie.)

The 5th Element (immensely entertaining)

When any of these movies come on TV I generally stop and watch at least a few minutes, if not the whole thing if nothing else is on.  What movies have you guys seen that have been better than advertised?
CB Draft Bucks: Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Tobias Harris, Zach LaVine, Aaron Afflalo, Jeff Green, Donatas Motiejunas, Jarrett Jack, Frank Kaminsky, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee, Shane Larkin, Nick Young

DKC Bucks. Also terrible.

I'll second the 5th Element - really fun movie

I'm sure I'll think of more later, but I'll nominate Empire Records
Faith and Sports - an essay by Jeff Clark

Keeping the Faith had a really stupid looking trailer, but was a pretty good movie.

  • "Love is the soul of a true Irishman"
Batman Begins.

When I initially heard about it, I thought "great, another rubbish batman film" and immediately put it in the same bracket as the previous post-Michael Keaton films. I couldn't have been more wrong. It was fantastic, and the sequel, The Dark Knight, is one of the best films of the last decade. Thank God for Chris Nolan.

Another one I'll throw in there is "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" - very good film.

40 year old Virgin - to me it looked horrible from the trailers.  Great flick.

The 5th Element is definitely on my list of "can't stop watching it if I happen to click by it".  Gary Oldman's great.

Having been subjected to many a kids film in the past few years, I'll rank "Space Chimp" as the movie I took the kids to see in theatre that I had the lowest expectations for that ended up being pretty entertaining. With kids 6 & 3 there is generally one, or fewer, age appropriate movie playing in the theaters at any given time.  I have to say I've actually enjoyed the vast majority of the movies we've taken them to.

Wall-E
Kung Fu Panda
Cars
Bee Movie
Ratatouille
Enchanted
House of 1000 Corpses (actually they didn't care for that one so much  ;) )
Yup

Galaxy Quest is great.  Tim Allen is the man.

George Washington
Wall-E
Dawn of the Dead  (Best zombie movie this side of 28 Days Later)
Traitor  (in theaters right now- great movie that gets no hype)

Transformers looked pretty bad but it was actually a really good movie. Can't wait for the 2nd one to come out.

"Click"  I thought the premises of the movie was pretty weak and I am not a big fan of Adam Sandler movies (except the early ones), but this movie was actually pretty good.  It had funny elements to it, good story and good life lesson that actually left me with moist eyes (not crying, just moist).   Plus, it has Christopher Walken which is always entertaining.  Great movie to see with the family.

"RV"  Not necessarily a great movie, but if we're talking about movies that looked awesome and turned out a good movie, this one is decent.  Simple movie but funny at times.  Robin Williams really is a funny guy.  Another good movie to see with the family.

I saw the trailer to cinderella man and thought it would be boring, but it ended up being one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen because russel crowe is the man!

Zoolander
Mulholland Drive
Blair Witch Project-I heard that it was terrible, so my expectations were low
Con Air-my sister said it was bad, she is silly
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Children of Men
Fast and the Furious
Conan the Barbarian

Tied for my all time biggest surprises were Bad Santa and Blow-not that they looked bad, but I never heard of them before I saw them-blew my mind
