I love Searching for Bobby Fischer.  I'm not sure that it would be everybody's "thing", but I certainly enjoyed it.

In my Top 10. Another fantastic movie in my Top 10, Kenneth Brannaugh's Henry V. Derek Jacobi puts that movie on a whole 'nother level!

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I will recommend some:

1. A Good Year starring Russell Crowe and Abbie Cornish (hell yea!)

2. The Machinist starring Christian Bale.

3. Equilibrium starring Christian Bale.

I've heard some really awesome things about Equilibrium.

I watched some movie with Adrian Brody where he supposedly killed some lady or something...I vaguely remember it stinking. A friend of mine said "If you like that, watch the Machinist". I said no thanks..

Anyone ever seen Jacobs Ladder?

If it wasn't for those creepy flying monkeys I'd love watch that with my daughters.  They're still a little squeamish.  All in due time!  Can't wait though.
Yup

One i hesitate to put forward, but will since im constanly met with blank stares when i talk about it, is Crimson Tide.

Absolutly stunning movie, hackman and washington at thier best.

Not sure it qualifies, sicne it was pretty main stream, putting it up since for all that i hardly ever find someone who's actually seen it.

oh yeah, and if you still haven't seen Casablanca or Citizen Kane, stop whatever you are doing and put it at the top of your Netflix cue right now

See...  I love classics, but I am firmly of the opinion that Citizen Kane is, by far, the most overrated film of all time.  It's amazing, from a *technical* standpoint.  In terms of story, though?  I just didn't find it all that compelling.  I could literally think of 500+ movies I like better.

Casablanca is a great flick, if just for the coolness factor.

Citizen Kane is all about technical breakthroughs. You have to give it props, just as you have to give George Mikan props when talking about historical greatness that changes the game.

If either entered the theaters/courts today, would they hold up as the greatest? ...not so much.

I'll pick a non classic. I just saw "Rushmore" this weekend. Good stuff. I was also recently very surprised with how fun "Waiting" is.. (if ya like romps)

Here's some that I liked but I don't think too many people have seen.

Scarecrow- Al Pacino and Gene Hackman

1000 Clowns- Jason Robards

Cinderella Liberty- James Caan

Last Detail- Jack Nickelson

Fargo- a lot of people

Heavy Weights, great movie.

The fat camp movie with Ben Stiller?  One of my favorite movies growing up, by far.

My all time favorite, that a lot of people may not have seen is Apocalypse Now

Most suprising comedy?  I had no expectations when sitting down to The Big Lebowski and it's now in my top five favorite movies ever

ok, i know i posted it, but now its got me thinking.

1. do you consider crimson tide mainstream?

2. have you seen it and what did you think.

(this brought on by asking 4 people at the office, and none of them seeing it, but all hearing its good)

I agree with some of the above comments about Kane but have my own thoughts

1. of course it is overrated, it is widely considered the all time greatest film ever - by definition that's too much

2. yes, it is a technical breakthrough film that has been copied over and over - like what the Beatles did for rock and roll

3. with that said, I did find the story compelling and enjoyed the telling of it very much - so if you haven't seen it, don't NOT see it because a few people thought it was boring - make your own decision

I think Crimson Tide is mainstream and a good film.

I have to admit I've never seen The Godfather. :-[

Have seen The Verdict and wasn't a huge fan.
