I wouldn't see why this incarnation of the griz would be any worse than last years Hawks...only problem is they play in the west... this would be a team that'd likely give the c's trouble in the regular season

Sign and trade... There has to be a sign and trade from Atlanta.

He already signed an offer sheet with another team. Isn't it impossible to do a sign and trade now?

Can't Atlanta just match it since he's restricted, then trade?

I think so.  I think this has happened before.

But say for some reason they DON'T match...

How dumb will the Clippers look for not making an offer?

They will match but probably after the full seven days that they have, during those seven days they will attempt to work out a sign and trade or at least see what their options are.

  • all hail garfield-sama!
I think I'm mostly excited about the Gay-Mayo combo.

If they pull this off, they got a triumvirate of Gay-Mayo-Smith..

Smith is a very good player. I think his trajectory continues to improve. Future all star if he can play for a winner.

not to wake any sleeping giants on this topic, but I really think he should have been an all-star this year... and he will be next year without a doubt as long as he's healthy, which if you look at his career, he's been able to do quite well

Hawks have already matched the offer. Havn't said for how much. Looks like he's staying a Hawk.

They matched that offer right quick and a hurry.  Now the Hawks can deal with the dynamic of having a $10m+ player and a shaky head coach nutt heads.  I wonder who is going to win that one.

Chris Wallace did Smith's agent (who also reps Javaris Crittendon) a solid here.

BTW, where are those posters on here who actually said they wouldn't trade Delonte West straight up for Josh Smith a couple of years ago when West was a Celtic?  Your talent evaluation skills might qualify you to be a future NBA GM  ;D

I see Smith becoming one of the most imposing defensive forces in the league, as long as he doesn't Zack Randolph/Tim Thomas his way through this big contract.

A great talent but your comment about Randolph/Thomas I think could be exactly why this has been a slow moving process to be signed.   More than 1 source has said in the past he is a locker room cancer.  If there is any truth to that then I can see why teams are hesitant with him.

If ATL doesn't match that offer, then there will be a sign and trade resulting in some type of blockbuster trade with 3 teams. It happens every summer, and this should be the one. If by chance Memphis got Smith, then that would make them a playoff contender. Which as the roster looks they would be the new GS warriors/Philly 76ers. A young team that causes problems for championship contenders.

memphis? a playoff team? never. not with both denver and now the clippers both fighting for the 8th seed.

the clippers aren't fighting for the 8th seed

If Atlanta isn't sure how much they like Smith, shouldn't they try to work out a sign and trade? They don't have to take back us much salary because Memphis is under the cap, right? So something like, Conley, Warrick and a pick for Smith would be a pretty good haul, and better for them in the long run. They're a borderline playoff team with Smith as it is...

Grizz wouldn't give up conley in a deal to get Smith.  Miami was trying to get Conley from Memphis for the Michael Beasley pick.  I don't think they would give up Conley for Smith if they wouldn't give him up for Beasley, who I think will be the better player in the long run.
