not that i'd be sad to see the player go, but the precedent it would set would be alarming.

Now I really believe it is a ploy.

These guys get together and talk about the NBA CBA coming up in time for their next contracts.  They talk about how they can get the most money out of it.  They decide 'hey, if we let people think we want to go to Europe, the NBA will fold to keep us.'

Just my opinion.

I think a better way of putting it is that Kobe is also threatening to go play in Europe.

First, neither he nor LeBron have been offered anything and $50 million for a cameo one year appearance is ridiculous. I can't see how a Euro team could ever make that money back.

Second, I don't see either going for a myriad of reasons.

The elite players in the league can threaten Europe all they want in hopes of the NBA changing the CBA and the maximum earning of a contract but until 5-10 of those elite players are lost for a significant amount of time, nothing is going to happen. Stern will simply say to go have a nice one or two year vacation and when you want to cement your legacy as one of the best ever, the NBA will gladly allow you back to play.

From what I hear, the European players actually resent the American players who come over and "steal" their roster spots.  I can't imagine how they'd react to American superstars coming over and getting all of the attention.

I shudder the thought (no, really, I do) of some Euro player cheap-shotting Kobe as he goes up for a dunk.

Yeah, I do too. I'd hate to see one of his own teammates do that to him.

.........

Oh, you meant a player on an opposing team. Yeah, I guess they might take a cheap shot at him too.

Come on, nick.  My concern for Kobe's well-being was said with palpable sincerity.

Sounds like he was getting sad that he wasn't getting much attention this offseason as opposed to offseasons past.  Needed to see his name in print.
We're the ones we've been waiting for.

I guess this is what happens when you lose the finals so badly, you run off to an inferior league where you have a chance.

Kobe is slightly more likely to go overseas than the primadonna.

O% chance that the primadonna would.  Snowball's chance in hell that Kobe would.

Follow the money.  Either would have to be offered about 100 million a year to consider it.

He probably realizes that he'd get more toughness from his teammates on a euro squad.
