Based on this interview with Paul Pierce, it sounds like the Truth plans to stay in Boston for atleast 5 more years. Have I said how much I love Paul Pierce? No Boston athlete had suffered through more during his career in Boston. Maybe Drew Bledsoe? This year was so special because Paul Pierce was able to climb that mountain top!

Can you imagine a year ago today Celtics fans had no hope! A couple days later everything changed! Woooooooooooooooo!

Long live the Truth in Boston!

fine with me as long as he accepts getting paid what his diminishing skills are worth - I'd love to see him retire a Celtic

I'm sick of the myth that Pierce played poorly in the 2002 World Championships.  He was about the ONLY guy that played good.  That was not a good team.  Guys like Andre Miller, Antonio Davis, Raef LaFrentz, Michael Finley and Shawn Marion should not have been on that team.  It wasn't Pierce's fault that most of the top players declined the invitation.  It's pretty sad when a guy who wanted to play gets villified and the players who didn't bother going get a pass.

Hmmm, this quote has got me thinking!!!

Which Boston athlete has suffered the most in his (her?) career?

A lot of athletes come to mind way ahead of Paul Pierce.  Granted he was on some losing teams and had the whole stabbing incident, but who has suffered the most while a professional athlete while wearing a Boston (New England) uniform?

Steve Grogan?  Injuries, losing teams, fans turn on him and then love him.
Cam Neely?  Injuries, losing teams, almost winning and being forced to retire.
Ted Williams?  Greatness in front of empty stadiums, career interrupted by 2 wars, fights w/ the press?

Thoughts?

William Russell wins my vote considering what they did to him in Reading.

Manny Ramirez is now leading the pack!

What exactly has Manny suffered through, besides $20 mil a year and being able to do pretty much whatever he wants with no consequences?  I'm not a Manny hater, but he definitely shouldn't be involved in this discussion.

Didn't mean to get this off track ---- I hate when I do that, it's not very polite.

I am going to post this as a separate thread.

On my way to work this morning, I thought
about Paul Pierce. I am wearing my HWC
Larry Bird jersey today (it's hot these days)
and I was hoping to see someone in a Lakers
tee, so I could thump my chest like KG does  :)
(I haven't seen much Lakers memorabilia since
June 17th, by the way. I wonder why?  ;))
Well, I didn't meet any Lakers fans but I
thought about winning No. 17 and how it will
ensure No. 34 going up in the rafters some day.
This great feeling of happiness surged through
my body, as I thought of how happy I am for PP.
I truly hope Paul will retire a Celtic and one
day I'll tell my son about his accomplishments.
I sure am happy to have witnessed Paul's way into
Celtic Lore.

Of the Big Three Pierce is the only one I want to see retire a Celtic. When Antoine was here and Paul a bit less mature, Pierce could be a brash, selfish player and person. Since Walker's departure Pierce has become first a quiet leader and now a demonstrative leader who is also a lead by example type of player.

His sacrificing of his offensive game while throwing his entire body, mind and soul into playing defense last year only showed that he is deserving of being a lifetime Celtic and a number in the rafters.

While trading KG and RA in the final years of their contracts would probably best serve the Celtics and their future I feel Pierce should remain Green until the end.

Now someone just has to convince him that come age 34 or so those 10.5% raises stop and he needs to start taking pay cuts.

There aren't too many players left that are willing to stay with their teams through thick and thin from the time they get drafted. LeBron is rumored to join JayZ in the Jersey, Melo is possibly up for grabs, Kobe had demanded a trade, but is likely to stay now, KG...I never thought he'd get traded, but it was about time. Besides Pierce, how many other players are out there with 10 years of experience still with their drafed teams??
Can't stop, Rondo!

You're right about TD.
But:
Would he have stayed with the Spurs
if they hadn't won in '99 (and the other years as well)?
I'm not so sure.

I was surprised nobody cared to comment on this. I had already given the news:

Another interview from Pierce to a Spanish newspaper. Highlights:

Gasol is a great player, doesn't understand all the criticism and without him the Lakers wouldn't have made the Finals.

He's going to play in the Celtics for the next FIVE YEARS and he hopes to win the title every year.
