Robber Barons.
Oklahoma City Backstabbers
Oklahoma City Traitors
Oklahoma City Despicable Excuse For Franchise That Deserves To Rot In Hell
Any one of three suits me fine. I think it's important to pick something that represents their franchise.
Oklahoma City Theft
Oklahoma City Travesty of Justice
The OKC Sonic-stealers
But do you have cultivate this kind of feelings for every other franchise in the League that was once relocated or you just despise the guys in Oklahoma? Is it because it's a rural state in the Midwest?
Come on, "Robber Barons" was clever. You just need to appreciate the use of the term in relation to 19th and early 20th century capitalists in this country; some saw it as a derogatory thing, whereas others see unfettered capitalism (which this move is) as a good thing. Hence, Robber Barons.
As for the negative feelings, though, those stem from the ownership group making certain promises to keep the team in the city, while they were lying through their teeth. This is extremely distasteful. When you couple that with Seattle being a key franchise at one point (winning a title and playing in the Finals on other occasions), it's not hard to see where the animus stems from.
Yeah, it was clever, I got the idea. But I think we can both agree that it's extremely rare to see Robber Barons used without a negative connotation, if it ever happened, can't we? Why haven't you suggested The Oklahoma Industrial Statesmen then?
Also, there was nothing remotely close to unfettered capitalism in America during that period. Robber Barons were mostly extremely gifted rent-seekers. Unfettered capitalism is about competition; Robber Barons prospered because they used the political power to protect their anti-competitive, hence anti-capitalistic, practices (to a point, I guess every team who receives public financing should be named Robber Barons).
You have a point on the distastefulness - I'd add amorality - about promising to do everything to keep the team in the city if Clay didn't comply with that. But that promise implies a degree of reasonablity, so at least we have a big IF.
Oh, on the history... I'm pretty sure that the history of The Seattle SuperSonics will endure. I respect their achievments and I'm sorry for their fans. But I mean, the Roman Empire was, as Walton would say, the most important empire of the Western Civilization!!! and nobody is proposing a restoration.
