Another big name hit the free-agent market on Monday.

Golden State Warriors' guard Baron Davis decided to opt out of the final year of his contract, sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

He leaves $17.8 million on the table. Players had until 12:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday to exercise the option in their contracts to opt out.

Davis averaged 21.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 7.6 assists last season for a Golden State team that went 48-34 but didn't make the playoffs. The two-time All-Star played in all 82 games last season.

Wow... can't say I thought this was coming. With Brand, Davis, Arenas, Maggette, etc. on the market, we could be in for a very exciting offseason.

EDIT: Woops, someone made a similar thread around the same time as me. Merge.

That would be an interesting sign and trade... full circle with Arenas.

Or how about Clippers let Maggette walk, sign Davis, re-sign Brand? Probably too much risk - and salary - for Sterling to take on, but I'd like that line-up.

Amazing. Again very surprised. I didn't see this coming.

All accounts out of Golden State have been Mully playing hard ball with Davis and refusing to pay him top dollar.

Where's Davis going to make his money? That sign-and-trade could go anywhere.

Let's think up a quick list:

Atlanta
Detroit
Clippers if they hold Brand. Juggling to many balls, probably not.
Lakers for Odom?
Miami for Marion?
New York (nah)
Orlando (for one of their wings and contracts if it's Hedo, instantly makes them top two in the East)
Phily (Andre Miller, rumours of Stefanski looking at Calderon)
Phoenix (move Nash now)
Portland

Wooo ... Portland would be an incredible fit. That backcourt of Baron and Roy with their power inside. Portland have an expiring contract and youth aplenty to offer up without detracting from their core. That's good. That could happen.

Cleveland?

You know they have to be trying.   Get either Brand or Davis and go along way with keeping Lebron in the future.

Wow, Orlando could sign-and-trade either Davis or Brand and take a giant step forward, so too the Lakers for that matter. (Bleh.) I'd be really interested to hear from somebody with a better handle on the salary cap, if any team is in a position to follow the Celtics blue print and acquire both. Miami? Send Marion to Golden State and the draft rights to Beasley, plus Blount and ?filler? to the Clippers for Brand? Or Philadelphia who already have $11 million in cap space?

Chad Ford has a good article on this. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=FreeAgents-080629

Yes there are some big names, but not a ton of money available and only among a few teams; most of those teams are the ones that already have bird rights on the big name free agents opting out of contracts

Philly: 14 mil, assuming they keep Iggy and Louis Williams

Charlotte: 12 if Okafor walks; he's due a minimum of 7 million for a qualifying offer will get quite a bit more as a good young defensive center

Seattle: 7.5 if Swift walks; if Swift stays, subtract whatever he gets.

Washington: around 3 million now that Jamison is signed, so if they re-sign arenas, they'll be over the cap. They have to re-sign him, really, since they can go over the cap to keep him and he's way better than anyone they'd get for the MLE or 3 mil.

LAC looks like they have about 30 mil available now than Brand and Maggette have opted out and if Livingston walks. Of course their roster would be completely stripped if they did that.

Memphis: about 15 under.

Golden State: about 29 mil with davis opting out and if biedrins walks. I'd assume Biedrins will get around 8 minimum, closer to 10 at least i bet.

That seems like a lot, but:
1. Memphis probably won't add salary this year; why else make the Gasol trade just to dump salary? Gasol would have been better and younger than any free agent they could target
2. Charlotte will keep Okafor
3. Washington will sign Arenas
4. Seattle will either sign swift or, if they let him walk, i bet they'll try to keep their budget low for now

So the only real players are Philly, Golden State, and the Clips, with 64 between them (a generous estimate)

Then keep in mind that players opt out to try to get MORE money, and remember that this is what the players were due in 08-09, that the players opted out of:
Brand 16.5 mil
Arenas 12 mil
Maggette 8.5 mil
Davis 17.2

That's about 54 mil right there, just between those four, all of whom will want raises above those amounts.

All in all, i bet most of those players return to their current teams, with maybe one guy headed to Philly (all they'd want is Brand, though, out of those four, unless there is a sign and trade).

Ah yes, the sign and trade. If there is a lot of action and surprises among these free agents, i bet it will be in the form of sign and trades. Let's hope so!

Let's hope not! For the Celtics' sake. But in all seriousness thanks for the summary Fan. TP.

With there now a bunch of big money players confirmed out there and not a lot of big money spenders in the market, it should be interesting how that effects all the trickle down money for some quality FAs like Posey, Udrih, Anthony Johnson, Carlos Arroyo, Bonzi Wells, Shaun Livingston, Matt Barnes, Mickael Pietrus, Eduardo Najera, Chris Duhon and some of the interesting RFA's like Josh Childress, Josh Smith, Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Monta Ellis, Sasha Vujacic,  and Delonte West.

There's definitely going to be some movement and I would include a bunch of the RFAs in that category.

Golden State has it's hands full this offseason with Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins as well as Baron Davis.

Got a lotta dogs in the fire, there, Stanimal.
We're the ones we've been waiting for.

Don't forget Cleveland, which always tries to get into the mix for point guards.  They'll probably offer Wally's contract plus draft picks in a sign and trade, although they don't have a lot of other assets.

Besides Cleveland there is a real possibility that Baron joins Brand in LA. Brand specifically mentioned that he wanted to learn from the Celtics example. Bringing Davis to LA would allow them to put an amazing roster on the floor:

Davis
Mobley
Thorton (Magette if the can keep him)
Brand
Kaman

They could also put together a solid supporting cast w/ Brevin Knight (Livingston) off the bench.

On ESPN rumor page, it says the Warriors have offered Gilbert just over 100 Million (while DC is offering 120 million)

Both the Washington Wizards and Golden State Warriors have offered Gilbert Arenas max deals, according to a source close to the three-time All-Star point guard.

The Wizards early Tuesday morning offered Arenas a six-year $127 million deal, according to the source, and the Warriors offered Arenas five years for $101 million. The Wizards, because Arenas was under contract with them, are permitted to offer six years while other teams can offer only five. -- The Washington Times
