What factors give some organizations (Lakers, Houston) the ability to bounce back and rebuild themselves back to competitiveness in a fairly short amount of time, while others take much, much longer?  For example, the Hawks seem to have trouble putting a competitive team together.  The Lakers seem to be able to bounce back from contending mode, to rebuilding, and back to contending mode quicker than any other team.

The short answer is good management.  The Hawks for example had some horrible decision makers over the last few years, and instability among their owners which made it even tougher.  Teams with stable ownership (especially who are willing to pay a little bit of money) generally have the best chance of success.

What makes a good organization is:
Good Owners (example - Wyc)
Good Execs (ex.Ainge)
Good Players (ex. 2008 NBA Champs..Boston Celtics baby!)
Good Coaches (ex. Doc)

They are all classy guys who deserved the 08 title!

Management who is willing to pay extra for luxury tax is a big factor; also another big factor: LUCK.

what makes a good organization? try to emulate the boston celtics.

we built our reputation back up thanks to our great history, we hired a gm who made his name here as a player and that's very much in keeping with what we do. old players are not forgotten. if they leave under a cloud, they pretty much stay under it. otherwise they're respected and our fans wish them well wherever they go.

from the parquet flooring to the countless numbers and 17 banners in the rafters this organization is pure class.
