If James Posey Opts out does he still have Larry bird rights? We don't need to use our MLE on him do we?

No, we don't have his Bird rights.

We have what's called his "Non-Bird" rights, which means we can give him up to a 20% pay bump next season, with 8% each season after for up to a five year contract.  If he signed a non-Bird deal, it wouldn't count against the MLE.

However, it's unlikely he would do so.  He can get more on a 3-year MLE deal than he can on a 4-year Non-Bird deal.

Thanks Roy, are these non-bird rights because he's opting out? If he didn't opt out would he have the Bird rights next year?

Bird rights only accrue after three years of not changing teams via free agency.  After two years, we'd have his "Early Bird" rights, which are as follows:

Quote
Using this exception, a team may re-sign its own free agent for 175% of his salary the previous season or the average player salary, whichever is greater.  Early Bird contracts must be for at least two seasons (which limits this exception's usefulness -- it's often better to take a lower salary for one more season and then have the full Bird exception available the next season) and no longer than five seasons.  A player can receive raises up to 10.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract using this exception.
...
If the player is a restricted free agent with two years of service and receives an offer sheet from a new team, the player's prior team may use the Early Bird exception to match the offer sheet.

Only if we're talking about a salary/year ratio, right? The 3 year full MLE would be around $18M and the 5 years non-Bird around $22.5M. Or am I missing something?

By the way Roy, what source on players salaries do you use?

Yeah, I meant can offer more on a 3 year deal than we can offer on a 4 year deal if we use the non-Bird exception.

Here's the breakdown:

Quote
Year 1: $3,847,200 (20% raise from this year's salary)
Year 2: $4,154,976 (8% raise from Year 1 salary)
Year 3: $4,487,374 (8% raise from Year 2 salary)
Year 4: $4,846,364 (8% raise from Year 3 salary)
Year 5: $5,234,073 (8% raise from Year 4 salary)

Non-Bird deals are limited to five years.

Thus, the largest contract we can offer is:

One year deal:   $ 3,477,200
Two year deal:   $ 8,002,176
Three year deal: $12,489,550
Four year deal:  $17,335,914
Five year deal:  $22,569,987

Assuming the $5.8 million starting figure for the MLE I read in another article is correct, another team could offer Posey a three year deal worth $18,829,120, or $1.5 million more than we could offer with the non-Bird exception on a four year deal.

For salary figures, I use http://hoopshype.com/salaries/boston.htm

For CBA info, I use http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm

So Roy, Posey will probably OPT out to get the MLE but he does have the Option of a 20% raise and 8% increment that would not effect the C's MLE correct?

Exactly.  Even if he opts out, we can offer him the 20% raise.  I doubt he takes it, but you never know.  We can also sign him using our MLE.

If I'm Danny I give him 5 a year contract avoiding the MLE. I know it's a lot of years but That kind of contract is not oppressing and the Celtics would truly benifit by reserving that MLE for other Role Players for shorter term contracts. How do you feel about that?
