I believe it was if the C's won the division that year.
Banner Day: Remember our recent discussions about the differing “NBA” icons on the Celtics’ championship banners? As you may recall, a team tour guide had said that the icon was white for championships that were won at home (because the Celtics were wearing white) and green for championships won on the road — but that logic didn’t hold up for all of the banners. Fortunately, Chris Sykes recently talked to the president of the company today that makes the banners and got the scoop: Today a man named Ned Flynn came into my store. He’s the president of New England Flag and Banner — they do all of the banners for the Celtics rafters and a bunch of colleges — so I asked him about the NBA icon. Ned had clearly heard this question before. He confirmed that it’s supposed to be based on whether the team clinched the title at home or on the road, but he explained why that system is no longer reflected on all of the banners: “Years ago, when the Celtics were on road trips, the circus would sometimes come into town and use the Boston Garden. Whenever this happened, the banners would have to come down to make room for the trapeze and such. On one of these nights, the office where the banners were being stored had a fire. Certain championship year banners were damaged, so new banners had to be quickly made before the Celtics returned for a home game. The only problem was that in the haste to make the replacement banners, the home and road championship-clinching locations were not taken into account. No one ever seemed to notice. The banners were even redone to make them larger in the ’80s and the mistake was unfortunately repeated.” Ned said he’s received many e-mails in the past over this miscue but never responded. He said the Celtics organization is aware of this as well, but no further action to change the mistakes has been made — it’s all now part of the Celtics lore.Big thanks to Chris for getting the story straight from the horse’s mouth.

Still more about the Celtics’ championship banners, courtesy of a reader who prefers to remain anonymous: “I have a friend whose brother works in the Celtics’ front office. He says the NBA has asked the Celtics to have the new banner (and ring) read, ‘2008 NBA Champions’ instead of ‘2008 World Champions.’ Wyc kindly told the NBA something to the effect of ‘I already have 16 banners that say “World Champions.” Enforce your rule with a team that doesn’t have a legacy.’”
Fire? Yeh right! The old flags were eaten by rats while in storage.
