I notice that there are 2 types of NBA logos on the championship banners. Why? What's the significance of them?

This question comes up from time to time, and nobody has been able to answer it.  I'm curious to know, myself.

  • Yup
We tossed around about every possible theory behind this the last time it came up, but none were ever confirmed.

My personal theory is that it was at the whim of whoever was making the flag and no real thought went into the logo choice either way.
Yup

I thought I was going to solve this puzzle, as I was once told it correlated to whether the clincher was played at home or on the road. When we clinch at home (like this year), NBA is written in green in a white circle with small green marks at the top and bottom. When we clinch on the road (like in 81), NBA is written in white in a green circle.

But looking over the banners, that's not true. We clinched at home in 57, 60, 61, 62, 64, 65, 66, 84 and 86. But 64 and 57, for example, clearly have different logos.

Maybe there really is no answer.
Go Celtics.

Does it have anything to do with when we rolled the old ABA into the NBA- 2 Logos, 2 Former Leagues?

The myth.  The Legend.

CROTOR is like the Batman of CelticsBlog rumors.  No one has ever really seen CROTOR.  But his legend has grown.

(anyone remember if the CROTOR rumor ever happened?  I can't remember what the rumor was.)

Nope, it didn't come through.  The rumor was that Doc was going to be fired mid-season.  I think the replacement was Rick Adelman, but I can't remember for certain.  I believe it was originally posted by Jumbocavs.

Didn't CROTOR also prophesy a major player trade as well? I don't remember exactly, but it seems like he predicted more than just Doc being fired...

I regularly check out www.uniwatchblog.com and it's funny that this topic got brought up on their website too.  Paul Lukas (the site writer) asked his readers if they knew anything about the differences in the NBA logo on the banners.  A person, Wally1912 wrote in this reply.

I guess it's just to make us go, "huh?!"

I wrote to Celtics a couple of years back regarding the NBA circle on the banners and got a response from Jeff Twiss of the C’s front office. He said their was no rhyme or reason to the two different types of circles. The manufacturer of the banners over the years simply inserted one of two different types at their fancy.

The recreations which hang in the New Garden simply copied the originals found in the Old Garden for authenticity’s sake.

FYI, the new scaled down banner the C’s are using today on one of their duck boat parade vehicles has the circle with the green edges, white middle, and green NBA letters.

Yeah, that's what I pretty much assumed.  It's just random.
