I just exchanged a couple of emails with Pete Vecsey of the NY Post, who has forgotten more about the NBA than any of us will ever know. I asked him for a prediction. This is what he said:

"This should be a layup drill for the Celtics after being defended by the Pistons. Perkins' domination is critical... "

Way to go, Peter!!!

Well, I've never trusted Vescey for anything else, so I'm not going to start now.

The Lakers' defense isn't anywhere near as bad as that quote implies.

It's called hyperbole, Roy.

You changed the quote after I responded to it.  You had left out the "after being defended by the Pistons" bit.  In the context of comparing the Pistons' and Lakers' defense, it makes more sense.

Vecsey is usually off his rocker.... but compared to DET and CLE's defenses, the Lakers' aberage D will be a treat. Side note: I actually think Cleveland played the best defense other than Boston.

Cleveland and Detriot had great defense.  The Lakers aren't even close to these teams.  But they are tall and it is the finals so I don't expect a layup drill.

The only problem I see is that we will still be in clutch and grab mode from the detriot series and the refs will nail us with some calls.

The Lakers have held each opponent to well below their scoring averages.  Their defense is good and very underrated.  The most important aspect is the coaching, and Phil has consistently developed gameplans to hide the defensive flaws that existed in the regular season.

If only Vecsey was someone whose opinion I value, I may feel good about this, probably not though, everyone can prognosticate, but it's up to the players to decide.

Funny how Vescey couldn't say enough about the Lakers after each game on NBA TV.  Of course Hollinger went against his computer and changed his mind too so who knows.

Yes, they are tall, but 2 of the tall guys (Gasol and Radmanovich) are not exactly athletic or highly mobile defenders.  Gasol blocks shot based on his height and reach, but I am more fearful of the quick, athletic or power defenders (Kobe, Odom, Turiaf) than height.  Kobe and Odom really worry me on D.

I think Perk and Rondo play such a key role in this series.  If Rondo takes/hits his 15 footers and Perk is aggressive offensively (would be great to see a good start for Kendrick), then the Lakers can't leave them and the world opens up for all 5.

My concern with this series is how much super start treatment kobe gets.
We barely survived the Cavs with Bron Bron getting all the calls,

At the very least, this ought to be a very entertaining series, a lot more high-scoring that the C's have been playing against Detroit and Cleveland.  I'm cautiously optmistic that they'll be able to do enough defensively to at least slow down LA, while I expect much better ball movement, more pushing the ball upcourt, a lot more crisp passing from us.  I don't agree with the pundits who think a faster pace automatically means good things for LA.
