I don’t post here much but I’ve been a true-“green” Celtic fan since 1990, I was 11 years old. I probably would have been one earlier but while I was born and raised in Massachusetts, my father was born and bred in New Jersey, (same town as Tommy H actually!), plus he didn’t much care for basketball.
I watched just about every game faithfully while I lived in MA, literally had every book that could be bought pertaining to the Boston Celtics, and bought some of the parquet floor dust that they used to sell there at the old Garden. The topper was getting to see a game in the Old Garden before it closed, the very last season. It was one of the few games that year’s team could make exciting, as they were so bad! Celts won on a last second shot, got the hear the Garden roar like I saw so many times on TV. It was one of the last really fun times I had with my father before he passed away a few months later.
So yes, I am freaking out. The Boston Celtics are one game away from their 17th title. The Celtics being World Champions has always been history to me, like the Kennedy Administration, pleasant to think about but without any personal connection. A somewhat odd, almost Forrest Gump moment comes in an old home movie of I as a small child. I was playing with some toys and totally oblivious to what was on the TV behind me. What was on the TV? The post-game celebrations of the Boston Celtics winning their 16th NBA Championship. The actual shot visible on the TV was the crowd all over the parquet floor as was the custom. The home movie shows my brother and I playing more attention to the “Shick” razor commercials of the era. The one with “The Beard is Back” song. ([dang] it, I couldn’t even pay attention to the sexier Gillette commercials of the era, at least they are a Boston-based company!)
Ask me, once I saw Tommy’s face when that card revealed the Leprechaun logo and thus dooming us to the 5th pick in the 2007 Draft, of the chances of the C’s making it to the NBA Finals in 2008, I would have said 0%. Any sane Celtic fan would have. And now we are 1 game way from not only with banner 17, the first since I started watching, we can do it against the LA Fakers. It’s literally like a dream come true.
It won’t make my life complete. But it will make my life as a sporting fan complete. I wouldn’t want them to go another 22 years without winning a title, to be sure. (Particularly if LA ever manages to get back to the Finals, I think I’d choke on my own bile if they ever passed the Celtics’ number of titles.) But even if they didn’t win for that long, I would have gotten to see them win 1 title…in the New Garden…over LA!!!!! It just doesn’t seem like this is actually possible.
So…I’ve got a pic of Red on my PC’s desktop, hope in my heart and “BEAT LA” on my lips!!!!!
