If it's about the money - and it may be because this is likely to be his last good contract -- then he'll likely be elsewhere.  But I'd go 3 years with him and spend a little extra to keep him happy.  Keep him around as long as you expect to contend.

He's a key part of this team and I imagine locking him up will be a priority this off season.

Why don't we wait to see what Posey does with his option? If Posey decides to opt out, we can negotiate.

Only problem is if he opts out and we try to sign him for longer, what would the hit be to our mid-level? I'm guessing he would eat it all up.

Definitely for three ... this guy is the "whole package" and more, and should be considered a very high priority!

I can't imagine James Posey not opting out. He wanted a long term contract last summer but couldn't get it. He's shown his value to the entire NBA once more and he's gotten a huge amount of appreciation that will likely only increase as this playoff run goes forward. I think he's got a great chance of getting the full or close to the full mid level exception. There's several teams where he'd be a great signing for including a bunch of contenders like San Antonio, Houston, Cleveland, Orlando, Detroit. I think all of those teams will be active in looking to spend their midlevel this summer. A bunch of others too that could make Posey good offers.

I'd have no problems paying Posey for 3-4 years. It's the 5-6 year midlevel contracts I want to avoid. 3-4 years is fine, this group will still be together at that stage.

The problem for Posey is that the better the team around him is, the more useful he'll become.  Most of the teams listed there don't have more than their mid-levels to offer...I am a huge Posey supporter and think we should give our midlevel up for him gladly, but we obviously cannot afford more.

The equation is simple:
-Keep Posey at all cost (or almost) and challenge every year for a championship. or
-Let him go and watch your defense (essential for any real championship contender) be vulnerable...
Money is money I do understand but I do think that for the team spirit and for his defense/3 pts skills we do need this guy!!!
You are talking about unsung hero? Here is one!!
Posey = Championships
You decide if you want to sign him or not, for me adding 3 years to is contract is CRUCIAL !

He has to be resigned. Period. If we have to trim some of the useless fat off the end of the roster to do it - TA, House, Pollard, Scal - then so be it.

If Ainge can convince him not to opt out, the Celtics can use that money to get even better.

That is an "Opt-out" to exercise Larry Bird rights type of deal. I bet Ainge sold that idea.

Unfortunately not.  Bird rights only apply after spending three years with a team (or on a contract).  Even if Posey fulfills his contract here and doesn't opt out, we don't have his Bird rights.

My wishful thinking is that he picks up his option, extends the contract to one more year based on the current contract, and then if he wants to get paid, the Celtics would be in a good position to make it happen. I doubt Posey will wait for that to happen though, and I don't see the Celtics offering much more at the moment as I would imagine they really need the mid-level to spread around free-agency.

Forget about his age because look at bruce bowen who is like 37 and still a decent defender and specialist type of player. And even if we factor in age , posey will jet for a 4 year deal somewhere.

We could give him easily a 3 year 18 million dollar deal(6 million per year)but why? when we can have him for an extra year for 2 more million (4 year at 20 million). I can see some other championship calibre team offering him a 4 year 24 million dollar(  6 million per year) , but if you can understand posey he will not now with everything he has accomplished play for any other team in the league who does not have a chance to win it all. Also he fits so well with the celts cuz they are a defensive oriented team. (imagine him with the lakers?? they are good but they don't play defense as a unit)

So ainge needs to sign him to a 4 year 20 million dollar deal. We need to also sign leon powe to a 4 year 16 million dollar or 5 year 20 million deal. There is no ifs about powe, he is going to be a solid nba player. Works so hard

My big concern here is the "plan" for replacing Ray as his contract expires.  2010-11 is THE key year to extending this run and Danny needs to maintain flexibility for that year.

That being said, I love Posey and would hate to see him go.  Big decision for Danny on the longterm future.  Might be telling to see if they eat into that cap space in this offseason.

I don't think that's the key year.  I doubt we'll have cap space until 2011-12 at the earliest, and I would argue not until Garnett comes off the books will we have any.  For 2010-11 we already have 44 million commited on just 3 players.  We'd still need to sign Rondo and between now and then, who knows how many free-agent pickups, extensions, and draft picks we'll make.

It isn't so much his age, but the age of the three stars.

He is here to compliment those three.  When those three are gone or on the downslope, the need for him is not as much as the team should be looking to rebuild.

Ya but he is about the same age as those three.  Also there have been concerns about his back.  That type of injury generally does not get better with age.  I would not sign him to anything more than a 2 year deal.  Unless it is under 4 mil (which  I doubt it will be).  I think he will begin his decline before any of the big three.  And I do not want him locked up in a 4 year deal when that happens.

poze needs to be locked up. he's done great things for our bench this season, and defensively he's been much better than advertised.
