Below are the fouls called game-by-game in the Atlanta series, with Boston's foul totals listed first.

My theory as to the Celtics problems was that they were afraid to play tough defense in Atlanta because they had been conditioned to believe they would get called for fouls and thus send the hawks to the line for freebies. So the ended up playing softer in crucial parts of away games, softer at least than they did during the regular season (ie., the refs changed the rules on them, and made them start second-guessing what they had made instinctive).

Oddly enough, this doesn't seem to be the case.

Only in game 6 did the Celtics suffer from a noticeable disparity. The Celtics got called for 11 more fouls in game 2, but it didn't affect the outcome.

I may have to rethink my theory.

In any event, on to the Cavs. Pycho-babble and basketball don't mix anyway.

My theory.... the NBA is full of bad refs.
