  • The good ole days.

My entry on the list would be Kieth Jarret, "Live at the blue Note" version of "Autumn Leaves". it starts with a piano only reharminization of the head, the band kicks in and they tear through it a couple more times and then start the solos. Traditional over the changes first - but the song has a couple really cool parts,  the bass solo is interesting as is the drums, it also transitions into a modal jam that would make the grateful dead jealous, but the solos conclude with another rehaminization of the head (perfect allusion to the start of the song) played against drone / pedal (not really a pedal) tones in the left hand.  Absolutely brilliant recording.

On that note, I'd have to submit Wynton Marsalis - "Autumn Leaves" from his In Standard Time Album.  For the head they go change time signature with each measure, starting with 1/4, and working all the way up to 8/4 time... brilliantly navigated by the master, Jeff Tain Watts on drums.

Although I don't care much for Wynton, this one is a great recording.

Absolutely, Message in a Bottle, I almost put that on the above list, also perhaps "Wrapped around your finger"
Ramble On, is also a great selection and of course I'd put Led Zep II on any greatest albums of all time list.

Gimme Shelter is the Perfect Song....and I truly do not like the Rolling Stones.  The song has everything a great rock song should have and then some.

As for Celtics, nothing beat the first few times they started playing "We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions" those moments were amazing (and unfortunately like any good thing they drove it into the ground).

U2's Joshua Tree, The Beatles' Abbey Road, Carol King's Tapestry (yeah, so what  ;)), Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island & Bob Mould's Workbook are close to perfect albums.
I cannot begin to tell you how much I love my kids - call me a sap, it's true.

Yes for Joshua Tree and also War is great.....Abbey Road yes though it doesn't hold me as it used to, but I forgot that "Come Together" is one of my all-time favorite songs...a perfect song....thanks for the Gimme Shelter TP!!  Someone else got there first, however!! :)

The Police didn't make a bad album, but my favorite is Reggatta de Blanc for the mood of songs like:  Message...Bring on the Night....Deathwish, Walking on the Moon and The Bed's too big....

I also love Wrapped around.....along with King of Pain...

Lol what the heck... did someone seriously just list Jin "long winding Road"?

Ok some people might think I'm being a jerk or something, but the premise of this thread was "perfect songs".  I get the whole Lupe Fiasco/Jin thing if you were just listing your personal favs.  But come on.  I understand it's all a matter of personal preference and all.  I have nothing against rap.  I listen to everything.  That devil song was cool by Lupe, but it's nothing new... Stones were doing that in the 60s (glad someone mentioned "Sympathy for the Devil").  And Jin - Long winding road?  Heh.  I remember that dude freestyling on 106 and Park.  Glad he's still around.  But how do you list that song as "perfect".  Might as well just go with the original Beatles version or something...

I'd have trouble adding to this thread unless it was just called "what's in your rotation right now".  On my way to work I listened to "Interpol - Public Pervert",
Fiona Apple - "Not About Love"
Muse - "Take a Bow"
Ray Charles - "Night Time is the Right Time"
Charles Mingus (I think the song is called II B.S or something)
Jay Z - "U Don't Know"
Shins - "Sleeping Lessons"
and the Three Dog Night version of "Try a Little Tenderness"

I wouldn't call any of them perfect.  :)  Just random songs that were on my playlist.  Some of you have some great taste in music though.  Thanks for the heads up.  It's sort of impossible to really weigh one piece of music over another though.  It's all fantastic.

I'm not calling them perfect. Those are just songs that I like to listen to, and Jin is not my personal favorite at all. Lupe Fiasco is a very good rapper in my opinion, people just have the wrong feelings about him because of the way he hit mainstream.

AZ - The Format
Nas - Got Yourself A Gun
Tupac - Street Fame
Lupe Fiasco - Hip Hop Saved My Life
Jin - Long Winding Roads
Jin - Time Machine
Immortal Technique - Dance With The Devil(really weird song, but its so good at the same time)
Flipsyde - Happy Birthday
Three Days Grace - I Hate Everything About You
Joe Budden - Three Sides To A Story
Big L - Da Graveyard
Jedi Mind Tricks - Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story

These are the songs that I recently listened to and can't stop listening to it.

I listened to that song once.  I will never again.  That is probably the most disturbing song I have ever heard.  And that I ever will here.

I get in a bad mood every time I even think about that song.

Yeah it disturbs me a bit too, but the way he tells the story is really good. Speaking of story telling another good song is this..

loved this song, ever since I heard it in the movie "Coach Carter"...it's great at provoking emotion and I its got a catchy slow beat...

oh and for a song that is meant to be played louder...and thus enjoyed with high volume... The Way I Are - Timbaland

Eminem FT. Nate Dogg - Till' I Collapse

Drop - Ying Yang Twins

defining songs as "perfect" was hard for me...so i just gave a few songs that I tend to listen to a lot...
oh and I think this thread is awesome, I've found a few songs that I've liked... TP for threadstarter.

Was thinking of a few more today and got on a Stevie Wonder tangent:

Superstition
Boogie On Reggae Woman
Maybe Your Baby (not Stevie's finest but definitely his most funky)

Neil Young - Harvest Moon (my wedding song)
Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
Los Lobos - Kiko
Little Feat - Two Trains
Eric Clapton - After Midnight (live rendition from Rainbow Concert)
Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place (Nave Melody)

Great songs.  I especially love "This Must Be the Place....."  An all-time great Talking Heads song, one of my favorites of all time.....

I also love Kiko and that whole album from Los Lobos.....I really like the Latin Playboys two albums as well as Los Lobos' stuff.  I saw them at the Middle East back in 2000 or so.....

Yeah that is a great one, never get tired of it.  In fact I love the whole "Moment of Truth" album.
